Mumbai Indians are close to confirming a third different captain for the IPL 2026 campaign, with Jasprit Bumrah emerging as the leading candidate to steer the side in their next outing. Hardik Pandya is currently sidelined with an injury, while the stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav has not been able to make the trip to Dharamsala for the upcoming clash against Punjab Kings. As a result, Mumbai will name a new on-field leader at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium.
Reports indicate Bumrah is likely to take over the captaincy duties for the match. Mumbai do, however, have a couple of other internal options. Tilak Varma, who was recently appointed as India A captain for an upcoming tri-series in Sri Lanka, could also be considered. Another experienced figure in the group is Rohit Sharma, the former India skipper who captained Mumbai to five IPL titles, though it is understood that the franchise is unlikely to look in that direction for this game.
The 33-year-old fast bowler, meanwhile, stands out as a natural frontrunner given his previous leadership experience at international level. He was also among the names discussed for India’s Test captaincy before it was reported that he decided against that role. On top of that, Bumrah brings a wealth of IPL experience to the dressing room, having played 156 matches across 13 seasons.
The same reports noted that travel arrangements had been made for both Hardik and Suryakumar to head to Dharamsala, yet neither has been in the city over the last two days. Suryakumar has recently welcomed a baby girl and may have been granted time away from cricket by the franchise, particularly because Mumbai are already effectively out of the running for a playoff spot.
Pandya, for his part, is still working through recovery from a back injury and missed Mumbai’s previous two matches. He was seen training late into the night at Reliance Corporate Park, but the expectation is that the medical staff have not yet provided full clearance.
Mumbai’s season has already suffered a decisive blow in the playoff race. Their elimination was confirmed after they lost to defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 10. That defeat marked their eighth loss of the tournament, leaving them with only three wins and a current position of ninth in the standings.
Punjab Kings, on the other hand, are set to look for an opportunity in Mumbai’s weakened situation. The franchise has been attempting to regain momentum after a rough patch that included four straight defeats, which pushed them down from the top of the table to fourth place. With Mumbai now dealing with availability issues, Punjab will be keen to convert their opponent’s uncertainty into points and strengthen their playoff qualification push.
