Bumrah’s captaincy sparks MI bowling-first vs PBKS, Omarzai in for Punjab

Jasprit Bumrah captained Mumbai Indians for the first time in this season’s setup and, after winning the toss against Punjab Kings, elected to bowl first. The decision came with Mumbai missing Hardik Pandya due to back spasms and also without Suryakumar Yadav, who was unavailable for personal reasons.

Toss, team news and bowling-first call

Hardik Pandya remains sidelined as he continues recovering from back spasms, while Suryakumar Yadav is also out for personal reasons. With Bumrah taking the reins, Mumbai opted to field first, expecting the surface to improve for batting after the early phase.

Bumrah’s leadership debut came with a specific expectation: the pitch should become more settled during the second half, making it easier for batters to score.

Mumbai Indians made two alterations to their playing XI. Sherfane Rutherford and Shardul Thakur were included, replacing Suryakumar Yadav and AM Ghazanfar.

Punjab Kings, led by Shreyas Iyer, said they too preferred to bowl first. Their team changes were broader, with Marcus Stoinis, Ben Dwarshuis and Yash Thakur making way. Azmatullah Omarzai, Xavier Bartlett and Harpreet Brar came into the XI.

Harpreet Brar was not part of Punjab’s bat-first lineup, and the plan suggested he could be used as an Impact Player when Punjab bowl.

The game is taking place on a brand-new wicket. The boundary measurements are 63 metres and 68 metres along the square, while the straight boundary stands at 72 metres.

Punjab Kings have had a tough run after opening the campaign with a strong stretch: following seven unbeaten matches, they have now dropped four straight. They remain fourth on the points table, but another loss would threaten their path to the playoffs. Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, are already out of the postseason race and will be aiming to finish the tournament on a positive note.
