Mumbai Indians etched their name into IPL history on Thursday in Dharamsala, with Jasprit Bumrah stepping out for the toss as captain against Punjab Kings. It was the first time the pacer has led the franchise in the tournament, and the moment carried a rare twist: MI became the first team in IPL history to be captained by three Indian players in the same season.
The change was forced by MI’s shifting availability in the middle of their campaign. Regular skipper Hardik Pandya was ruled out due to a back spasm, while stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav was unavailable for personal reasons. With both senior leadership options sidelined, Bumrah took charge and delivered yet another milestone for the franchise.
MI’s triple-Indian captaincy milestone
Across IPL history, only a handful of teams have used three different captains within a single season. Mumbai’s 2026 run, however, stands out because all three leaders were Indian: Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah.
Earlier seasons that featured three captains within the same team—but not all from the home country—include:
- MI in 2008: Harbhajan Singh, Shaun Pollock, Sachin Tendulkar
- Pune Warriors India in 2013: Angelo Matthews, Ross Taylor, Aaron Finch
- Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2021: David Warner, Kane Williamson, Manish Pandey
- Punjab Kings in 2024: Shikhar Dhawan, Sam Curran, Jitesh Sharma
- MI in 2026: Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah
The statistic also underlines how unsettled Mumbai’s season has been behind the scenes. Even with much of the core squad staying in place, injuries and short-notice absences have repeatedly pushed MI to alter their leadership structure.
Bumrah’s wait for the captaincy ends
Bumrah’s emergence as MI captain came after a notable delay. He played 156 IPL matches before being handed the captain’s role for the first time—making him the second-most seasoned player to debut as captain in the league, based on appearances.
Only Ravindra Jadeja waited longer, taking charge after featuring in 200 IPL games. Bumrah’s captaincy debut now places him ahead of several prominent names on that experience-to-leadership timeline, including Manish Pandey, Axar Patel, and Kieron Pollard.
At the toss, Bumrah added a touch of humour to the occasion, remarking: “I didn’t think that I would be a Test captain before becoming MI captain.”
For MI, the outing became another chapter in a season that has not gone smoothly overall. Still, Bumrah’s leadership debut injected a fresh storyline into their campaign as the five-time champions look to salvage pride while navigating a challenging run of results.
