England all-rounder Jamie Overton has confirmed that his Indian Premier League run with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has been ended early because of injuries. The right-arm pacer and lower-order batter said he is “gutted” to be leaving Chennai IPL action at a crucial stage, while also thanking the franchise’s supporters for the backing they’ve shown throughout.
Overton’s IPL exit comes at a tense moment for CSK
CSK’s season, which has been gathering momentum and has brought the team close to the playoff threshold, has now suffered a major setback. One of the side’s most influential performers will not be available for the remainder of the tournament after sustaining a thigh injury.
With Overton ruled out, CSK have moved quickly to secure a like-for-like replacement. The franchise has drafted South African all-rounder Dian Forrester to take his spot in the squad.
Overton’s message to CSK fans
- Overton shared his disappointment about heading home from the Chennai IPL stage at a crucial point in the tournament.
- He said he thoroughly enjoyed the season and urged the team to finish strongly.
- He thanked CSK supporters for the messages and continued support.
- He expressed excitement for next year, adding “#yellove” and “#csk” in his post.
- He posted the update on Instagram.
In his Instagram statement, Overton wrote that he was “gutted” to return from the Chennai setup at the crunch phase of the competition. He added that he had loved the campaign, praised the messages sent by fans, and said he was grateful for the affection he received. He also made it clear he is already looking ahead to what comes next.
Overton’s impact with ball and bat
Overton has been CSK’s second-leading wicket-taker of the season. He has collected 14 wickets at an average of 17.78, with an economy rate of 18.89.
He recently produced a standout spell that earned him Player of the Match honours, finishing with figures of 3/36 in CSK’s previous outing. That performance came in a five-wicket win over Lucknow at Chepauk on May 11.
With the bat, Overton has also provided valuable contributions from lower down the order. He has scored 143 runs across six innings, averaging 34.00 and striking at 158.13, with a best score of 43 not out.
Forrester steps in for the injured Overton
Dian Forrester, the replacement for CSK, is a right-arm pace bowling all-rounder. In T20 cricket, he has amassed 681 runs across 36 matches and 33 innings, striking at better than 140 with an average of 35.84, including two fifties.
Forrester has also contributed with the ball, taking 11 wickets at an average of 30.27. His best bowling return in T20s is 3/30.
CSK’s playoff push continues—next match vs LSG
Despite the blow of losing Overton, CSK remain in the running. They sit fifth in the points table with six wins and five defeats, and their path to the top four remains open.
CSK can still move into the top four if they win their next match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Friday, keeping their playoff hopes firmly alive.
