Talent can only take a batter so far; the rest is usually built through the right environment, the right conversations, and the right people around you. For India opener Abhishek Sharma, that influence has come from one of the country’s biggest T20 icons, with Yuvraj Singh offering mentorship while Abhishek also uses the global platform of the Indian Premier League to keep learning from elite minds and match-winners. The 25-year-old, who was part of India’s squad that won the T20 World Cup in 2026 before turning his attention fully to IPL 2026, has recently opened up about how Yuvraj’s guidance reshaped both his technique and the way he thinks under pressure—lessons that he carries into every game in national colours and at franchise level for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Abhishek said training with Yuvraj was a defining moment, explaining that he had watched and admired him since childhood. He noted that early on he received some direction, but their time together was limited; the lockdown, however, created a chance for deeper work. In Abhishek’s telling, Yuvraj treated the period as an opportunity to get hands-on with a small group of players, and Abhishek considered himself lucky to be among them. “Training with Yuvi paaji was a huge moment for me,” Abhishek said during an appearance on JioStar. “I had looked up to him since I was a child. He was my idol. He gave me some guidance early on, but we didn’t have much time together. Then came the lockdown. I think Yuvi paaji saw it as an opportunity to work closely with a few players. I was lucky to be one of them.”
More than the drills, Abhishek highlighted how a particular message from Yuvraj helped change his belief system. During their camp, he said Yuvraj made it clear that what they were building was not only meant for domestic cricket or for surviving a few IPL matches, and certainly not just about getting through the next game. Instead, the preparation was framed as mental training for India’s biggest occasions—learning how to win in high-pressure situations, play innings that swing matches, and contribute with the ball when it matters most. Abhishek added that this shift in mindset has influenced how he approaches national duty and franchise fixtures alike.
While those mentorship lessons formed one part of his growth, Abhishek also spoke about how his batting partnership with Travis Head has sharpened his instincts in modern T20 cricket. He revealed he had been tracking Head’s style even before the Australian joined SRH, and once the duo became team-mates, Abhishek immediately asked about the mindset behind Head’s aggressive start. “I have been following Travis Head’s game for a year and a half before he joined SRH. I was happy when he became my teammate. The first thing I asked him was about his batting mindset,” Abhishek said.
Abhishek then described how closely he took Head’s advice into practice. He said Head’s clarity helps him judge match situations quicker, and that the Australian’s ability to dominate bowling attacks across formats has become a reference point for him at the top of the order. In Abhishek’s account, Head’s approach boils down to a straightforward thought process: observe the ball carefully, and if the first delivery looks hittable, commit to the shot. “I admire how he performs in all three formats and dominates the bowling. He told me his plan is simple: watch the ball closely, and if you feel you can hit the first delivery, go for it. I followed his advice in my practice before the IPL. Now, if the ball is in my slot, I look to hit it from the first ball,” Abhishek added.
Since 2024, the Head–Abhishek opening partnership has grown into one of the most threatening combinations in the league, and IPL 2026 has continued that trend with the same aggressive momentum. They recently put together a 120-run stand against Punjab Kings, and earlier they gave Delhi Capitals a rapid start with a 97-run opening burst off only 53 balls. The pair had already set a benchmark against the same opposition in 2024, producing a record 125-run powerplay partnership, underscoring how consistently they can take the game away from the fielding side early.
With influences from both mentorship and elite teammates, Abhishek now looks to keep building on a strong season. He has posted a best score of 135* and has amassed 380 runs from eight innings, keeping him very much in the Orange Cap conversation heading into the later stages of IPL 2026.
