Abhishek Sharma’s 22-ball 59 vs CSK Proves Why He’s a Game-Changer

Abhishek Sharma’s IPL season had looked stop-start, but against Chennai Super Kings in Hyderabad on Saturday he produced a knock that immediately reset the narrative. The Sunrisers Hyderabad opener arrived at the venue with a patchy run of scores—48, 0, 74, 0—and then, after being dismissed for a duck in the previous game, he struck back decisively. Abhishek made 59 off just 22 balls, a blistering effort featuring six fours and four sixes, and his innings ended with a strike rate of more than 268.

A major talking point was how quickly he took control in the middle overs. In the fifth over, he targeted Matthew Short for 25 runs, smashing four boundaries and clearing the ropes once. That surge carried him to his half-century in only 15 deliveries, taking him past a personal benchmark he had set earlier—his previous fastest fifty was also 15 balls before, when he had reached the mark in a 16-ball effort against Mumbai Indians back in 2024. The 15-ball fifty now stands as the third-fastest in IPL history. Only Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 13-ball fifty versus Kolkata Knight Riders in 2023 and the joint second-fastest 14-ball fifties by KL Rahul, Pat Cummins and Romario Shepherd rank above it.

Speaking after the innings, Ravichandran Ashwin highlighted the quality of Abhishek’s hitting during that over. “Finally, he got out to a ball that was on the stumps,” Ashwin said. “But the over in which he took down Matt Short was special. I haven’t seen many players who can hit the ball while standing back like that. One delivery was in the slot, but the other was wide of him—he arched back and still managed to take it down. These are special shots.” Ashwin added that it is not always easy for a batter to thrive against a bowler’s matchup, especially when it comes to an off-spinner. “For someone like Matt Short, playing his first game, bowling to someone like Abhishek Sharma is not easy. He’s a left-hander and a typical match-up for an off-spinner. He wouldn’t have expected that,” he said.

Even with the inconsistency earlier in the season, the numbers show Abhishek has remained a high-impact presence. In six IPL matches this year, he has scored 188 runs at an average of 31.33 and a strike rate of 229.26, including two fifties, with his best score of 74. He has also reached a key career marker, completing 2,000 runs in the IPL—accumulating 2,004 runs in 80 innings, at an average of 27.45 and a strike rate of 167.55. That total includes one century and 11 fifties.

For Sunrisers Hyderabad specifically, Abhishek’s contribution has been significant as well. Across 80 matches for the franchise (77 innings), he has amassed 1,941 runs at an average of 26.95 and a strike rate of 166.89, featuring one century and three fifties. Notably, he is also the second-fastest batter in IPL history to reach the 2,000-run milestone, achieving it in 1,193 balls. Only Andre Russell reached the mark quicker, doing so in 1,120 deliveries.

Outside the IPL, Abhishek’s year has included plenty of runs across formats. In 19 T20 matches this year across competitions, he has made 511 runs at an average of 28.38 and a strike rate of 209.42, with six fifties. Still, the same period has also brought challenges: he has recorded seven ducks this year, which is the most by any Indian batter in a calendar year.
