Adelaide Oval in talks to host IPL match next March, report says

Adelaide Oval is weighing up a bold bid to stage an IPL match in Australia as early as next March, with the prospect that the league’s first fixture on Australian soil could arrive on a regular-season weekend rather than a special tournament. The plan is being driven by Adelaide Oval chair Jamie Briggs and South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) head Will Rayner, who have held preliminary conversations with key figures over the past few weeks.

While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet received an official approach, it is expected that formal contact will follow in the near term. The proposal is also being framed as part of a wider, reciprocal cricketing concept—one that could potentially see Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) schedule a game in Chennai, strengthening ties between the two franchise ecosystems.

Why Adelaide Oval believes it can make it work

Adelaide Oval has been positioning itself as a year-round global venue and has already indicated interest in hosting the final of the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Officials feel that landing an IPL match at the ground would add another major international milestone for the city and further lift its profile with worldwide audiences.

Discussions have also reached the political and administrative level. South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas and federal trade representatives have reportedly been consulted on a non-binding basis. Cricket Australia chair Mike Baird and chief executive Todd Greenberg are also understood to be aware of the talks.

  1. Adelaide Oval believes the venue can be converted from a cricket setup to an AFL-ready ground within 48 hours, which would support the feasibility of a late-March IPL date even with a busy sporting calendar.
  2. March is also seen as an attractive window because of typically more favourable weather conditions for an outdoor spectacle.
  3. Tourism South Australia has given early backing, pointing to the wider economic impact such fixtures can deliver beyond the immediate spend from visitors.
  4. Officials stress that the proposal is still in its initial phase and would require approval from the BCCI before any match can be confirmed.
  5. There is confidence the IPL in Adelaide could pull huge crowds and deliver a strong global television reach.

The push has gained momentum from the growing trend of major international leagues staging matches overseas, with South Australian authorities drawing confidence from that precedent. The region has previously used big-ticket events such as LIV Golf and the AFL’s Gather Round to increase visitor numbers and expand international visibility.
