NEW DELHI: Akash Singh made a dramatic impact in IPL 2026 on Friday, combining pace, precision and a viral moment of self-belief. For Lucknow Super Giants against Chennai Super Kings, the left-arm quick delivered a standout three-wicket spell of 3/26 in his four overs—then explained the small note that sparked widespread attention.
Quick facts
- Player: Akash Singh (left-arm pacer)
- Match-up: Lucknow Super Giants vs Chennai Super Kings
- IPL 2026 impact: 3 wickets for 26 runs in 4 overs
- Dismissals: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, Urvil Patel
- Viral moment: a folded chit shown after each wicket
It was Akash’s first appearance of the season, and he wasted little time in asserting himself. He struck three times to remove Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson and Urvil Patel, turning the middle overs into a turning point for Lucknow.
After each dismissal, he reached into his pocket, pulled out a folded chit and briefly flashed it around the ground. The gesture immediately drew attention from fans and prompted plenty of questions during and after the match.
Speaking later, Akash clarified that there was no secret code or message intended to unsettle opponents. Instead, the note was purely a source of personal motivation.
During the mid-innings interview, he described how he thinks about mindset as much as execution. “I know I express myself well and people tell me that too. But honestly, it’s about the environment you create around yourself,” he said, adding that he spends time studying how champions operate and how they work hard.
He also revealed what was written on the chit—phrases designed to lift his confidence when the pressure rises. “On that note I had written things like ‘Akki knows how to take wickets in T20 cricket’. It just motivates me during the game. Sometimes these things work, sometimes they don’t, but if something helps me stay motivated and helps me perform better, then I’m willing to do it,” Akash added.
“Come to dominate” mindset
Akash’s celebration, and the idea behind it, reflected the emotion of finally getting a chance after waiting. He said the mindset he carries into matches is built on attacking the biggest names rather than settling into a containment role.
“My mindset is always about getting big wickets because when you come to the IPL, you shouldn’t just come to play — you should come to dominate,” he stated. For him, taking control early with key breakthroughs is the foundation for consistency in T20 cricket.
The 24-year-old stressed that preparation has two parts: skill and mental sharpness. “You need to stay one step ahead skill-wise, but at the same time the mental side matters a lot. If you don’t dominate mentally in this game, you can’t move forward consistently,” he said.
With Akash not featuring regularly earlier in the season, he framed the performance as a reward for persistence. When opportunities don’t come often, he believes the work has to continue regardless of matchday availability.
“When you are not playing regularly in the IPL, you have to keep pushing yourself constantly. Throughout the season and even in the off-season, I kept working hard,” he concluded, explaining how the spell—and the confidence behind it—was built long before it arrived.
