Andrew Flintoff named new head coach of Sydney Thunder in BBL

Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has been named the new head coach of Sydney Thunder in Australia’s Big Bash League. The appointment was confirmed on Tuesday, June 2, with Flintoff stepping in as the replacement for Trevor Bayliss.

Flintoff takes over after Bayliss exit

Flintoff’s move marks his first coaching job overseas. He agreed to a two-year contract with the Sydney-based franchise. The switch also follows Bayliss’s departure in February, after six seasons in charge.

Thunder’s recent league finishes provided the backdrop to that change. In the BBL 2025/26 campaign, the team ended at the bottom of the standings, mirroring the outcome of the previous edition.

Coaching background and path to Sydney

Flintoff will bring experience from multiple coaching environments. Before this BBL role, he had been head coach of Northern Superchargers in The Hundred, guiding them to two top-four finishes after starting from the bottom of the table.

He has also worked with England’s pathway setup, coaching England Lions during their recent tours. In addition, Flintoff served as a consultant to England’s white-ball sides under Matt Mott during the 2023/24 season.

While Flintoff is now set for his first overseas coaching assignment, his playing ties to the Big Bash are limited. He appeared briefly in the league late in his career, turning out for Brisbane Heat in seven matches during 2014/15.

Earlier, he had been scheduled to join as a player, but an injury derailed plans that would have seen him link up with the Queensland Bulls in 2010—at a time when the Big Bash functioned as an inter-state competition.

Squad mix, competition for the role, and Flintoff’s message

Thunder’s leadership expects the coaching appointment to help shape a balanced squad. Flintoff believes the blend of seasoned campaigners—including David Warner, Chris Green and Daniel Sams—can complement younger talent such as Sam Konstas, Matthew Gilkes and Tanveer Sangha.

In the lead-up to the decision, Flintoff was reported to have fended off interest from Shane Watson and Dan Christian to secure the head coach position.

  • Flintoff is set to begin a two-year stint with Sydney Thunder.
  • He expects experienced players Warner, Green and Sams to gel with youngsters Konstas, Gilkes and Sangha.
  • He was reported to have beaten competition from Shane Watson and Dan Christian for the role.

What Flintoff said after the appointment

After the confirmation, Flintoff said he was eager to start and approached the opportunity with optimism. He pointed to the franchise, the group of players and the support structure as reasons for confidence, adding that he feels there is “something really big to build on”.

Thunder also described the appointment as a major milestone. In a club statement, the franchise called it “their most significant off-field acquisition in club history”, while General Manager Trent Copeland said the move represents “a huge day in the history of Sydney Thunder”.
