Anshul Kamboj taken to cleaners as Gujarat pile on runs in IPL clash

Chennai Super Kings fast bowler Anshul Kamboj had yet another afternoon to forget as Gujarat Titans piled on the runs, blasting him for 56 runs in his four overs at an economy rate of 14. Although there were signs of improvement earlier in the season, his more recent spells have been far less convincing, with the death overs becoming an increasingly tough zone to defend as batters look to target his variations.

The latest blow came after a particularly damaging outing versus Lucknow Super Giants, when Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh took Kamboj apart for four sixes each. In that match, he conceded 63 runs in only 2.3 overs, a spell that underlined how quickly games can swing when momentum shifts. Against GT at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the same theme continued: Gujarat kept finding the big hits, striking Kamboj for four more maximums and maintaining pressure throughout the spell.

The heavy punishment has now pushed Kamboj toward an unwelcome IPL milestone. He has overtaken Rashid Khan to become the record holder for the most sixes conceded in a single season, with 34. For the young pacer, it has been a steep learning curve—he began the tournament with promise, but as the tournament progressed he struggled to sustain consistency in the final overs, where batters have increasingly been willing to attack his deliveries. With the number now sitting at 34 sixes conceded, the tally reflects a difficult second half of the campaign.

Most sixes conceded in an IPL edition: 34 – Anshul Kamboj (2026); 33 – Rashid Khan (2025); 31 – Mohammed Siraj (2022); 30 – Wanindu Hasaranga (2022); 30 – Yuzvendra Chahal (2024); 30 – Kagiso Rabada (2026).

Even with the overall damage, Kamboj did manage a breakthrough. He dismissed Sai Sudharsan for 83, but the wicket arrived slightly late, after the left-handed batter had already built a strong base that helped Gujarat move toward a commanding total.

Shubman and Sai fire GT to 229/4

Gujarat Titans reached 229 for four thanks to another dominant showing from their opening duo, with Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan continuing a rich run of form. Together, they put together a record seventh-wicket century stand, helping GT set up an imposing target on a surface that offered plenty of carry and true bounce. From the start, the pair made full use of the conditions, forcing the CSK bowlers to work under sustained pressure rather than letting the innings settle.

Gill set the tone with a fluent 64 off 37 balls, displaying timing and control, particularly during the powerplay spell when he took on Spencer Johnson, the left-arm pacer. He reached his fifty in just 23 deliveries, a clear signal of the intent to keep the scoring rate elevated from early on.

At the other end, Sudharsan anchored the innings with composure, striking 84 off 53 balls. In the process, it was his fifth consecutive half-century—another reminder of how comfortably he has been navigating deliveries and building innings. While Sudharsan provided stability, Gill accelerated the momentum, and their 125-run partnership came off 74 balls, giving Gujarat the kind of platform that usually makes late-innings acceleration much easier.

The stand also reinforced the growing connection between the two at the top of the order, while further highlighting Gujarat’s authority during the powerplay overs throughout this IPL season.
