NEW DELHI: India-A has unveiled two separate squads for its forthcoming tour of England, with Anushka Sharma taking charge of the T20 group and Harleen Deol appointed as captain for the ODI contingent. The itinerary begins with three Twenty20 internationals starting June 20, before switching formats to a three-match one-day series from July 1.
Anushka Sharma, who recently marked her international debut during India’s tour of South Africa, has been handed the leadership role for the T20 leg. Vrinda Dinesh has been named vice-captain, rounding out the leadership structure for the shorter-format matches.
Harleen Deol, meanwhile, will lead the ODI team in England after missing out on a place in India’s Women’s T20 World Cup squad. Pratika Rawal has been named vice-captain for the one-day series.
The selectors have also brought in a blend of younger prospects and rising domestic performers into the India-A setup. G. Kamalini and Vaishnavi Sharma—both of whom have recently appeared for the senior Indian side—have been included in both the T20 and ODI squads.
Jintimani Kalita earns her first India-A selection in both formats, while Tanisha Singh and Purvaja Verlekar are among the newer additions, with Verlekar joining the T20 group and Singh included in the ODI squad.
England tour seen as stepping stone
The England tour is viewed as an important opportunity to strengthen India’s depth pool and provide young players with valuable overseas experience. It also arrives at a key moment, as India continue to shape and refine squads ahead of upcoming ICC events.
In the T20 squad, the group features players such as Minnu Mani, Shabnam Shakil and Tanuja Kanwer. The ODI side balances that youthful energy with more experienced domestic performers including Priya Punia, Tejal Hasabnis and Sayali Satghare.
With a combination of fresh talent and players already under consideration by national selectors, the India-A assignment in England could prove to be a significant platform for further opportunities with the senior team.
