Australia clarifies IPL window: Cummins, Hazlewood can finish before Pakistan ODIs

Cricket Australia has moved to clear up the timing question around its players’ international commitments, confirming that those taking part in the Indian Premier League will be permitted to finish their IPL schedules before linking up with the national squad for the forthcoming ODI series against Pakistan.

The clarification follows the overlapping calendar between the league’s late stages and Australia’s bilateral ODI assignment. With the ODI series running through the same window as the IPL’s culmination, Cricket Australia has indicated that the players already in the tournament “will still be in the IPL and will complete their commitments,” rather than departing midstream to join the national side.

This decision comes on the back of an announcement from Cricket Australia and the Pakistan Cricket Board regarding a three-match ODI series slated for May 30, June 2 and June 4 in Pakistan. Australia’s players are expected to arrive in Islamabad on May 23, a date that falls during the IPL playoff period. The scheduling crunch is intensified by the fact that the IPL 2026 final is scheduled for May 31.

Several prominent Australian cricketers are currently involved in the IPL, including captain Pat Cummins and stand-in ODI skipper Mitchell Marsh. Other Australians in the competition include Travis Head, Tim David, Josh Hazlewood, Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis, Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc and Matthew Short.

While the IPL league phase is set to end on May 24, the situation could keep some Australians in India for longer if their franchises progress into the playoffs. At present, teams such as Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are among the frontrunners contending for places in the knockout rounds. Officials from those franchises have already indicated that their overseas players—Australia included—will honour their IPL contracts fully and will not depart during the season.

Cricket Australia has not yet confirmed the squad for the Pakistan ODI tour, leaving room for selection tweaks if required to avoid further clashes with the playoff commitments. The upcoming ODI series will also be a milestone of sorts for Australia, representing its first bilateral ODI tour of Pakistan since 2022.

Earlier in the year, Australia toured Pakistan for a T20I series in January-February, with the home team winning the three-match contest 3-0 in Lahore.
