Bangladesh seal 2-0 Test sweep as Pakistan endures another humiliation

Pakistan suffered another crushing blow on Wednesday as Bangladesh completed a second straight Test whitewash, handing them their fourth consecutive defeat in the format. Mohammad Rizwan fought hard but Pakistan’s resistance ended 11 overs into the final day in Sylhet, with Bangladesh winning the second Test by 78 runs and sealing the series 2-0.

Rizwan’s effort offered plenty of resolve, but Pakistan couldn’t bridge the gap created by Bangladesh’s control throughout the match. With the win, Bangladesh not only wrapped up the contest, but also ensured the series ended with a clean sweep—matching a similar statement Bangladesh made earlier in 2024 when they achieved the same kind of dominance over Pakistan in Pakistan.

Pakistan captaincy under pressure

The result has intensified scrutiny surrounding Shan Masood and his captaincy. Since Masood was appointed in 2023, he has led Pakistan in 16 Tests. During that span, Pakistan have lost 12 times, a record that has placed him among the most unwanted figures in terms of defeats for a Pakistan Test captain.

  • Masood’s leadership has come with 12 losses in 16 Tests.
  • He holds the record for the second-highest number of defeats as Pakistan’s Test skipper.
  • Only Misbah-ul-Haq has more losses, with 19 defeats across 56 matches.

Masood’s future left with the PCB

A Geo News report suggested that Masood is likely to step down as Pakistan’s Test captain following the whitewash. That expectation gained further support after his post-match interaction, where he indicated that the next steps would be handled by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Masood said he did not want to single out anyone with blame or praise, stressing that the team’s Test struggles need discussion. He also made it clear that the matter of captaincy ultimately belongs to the board.

  • He said he does not want to criticise or praise individuals.
  • He indicated he will sit down with the PCB to discuss why Pakistan have not been performing in Test cricket.
  • He added that the decision on captaincy is for the board to make.

Masood also explained that his intention in taking up the Test captaincy—after December 2023—was to raise Pakistan’s standards in the longest format. He noted that certain issues require debate with the board, and that the final call will always be taken by the PCB.

He further underlined his mindset by saying he wants to keep looking for ways to improve the team, while also accepting challenges and embracing opportunities.

Apology to fans and praise for Bangladesh pitches

Even with the defeat, Masood addressed supporters directly. He apologised to the fans after the loss, saying he does not focus on individual contributions unless the team wins. He urged that Pakistan must not view matters emotionally and instead find a path to improve in Test cricket.

Masood also used the post-match moment to recognise the work behind the venues. The 36-year-old, who has been Test captain since December 2023, said he would like to thank the people responsible for preparing the pitches for both Tests in Bangladesh.

  • He said the wickets were “very good” Test tracks.
  • He credited the surfaces with being favourable for batting.
  • He noted that the pitches also offered assistance for spinners.
  • He added that they had something in them for pace and movement as well.
