BCCI Secretary Confident Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Could Get India T20 Chance

NEW DELHI: Fans have been asking the same questions since the teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi burst onto the scene—when will he step out for India at full international level, and how soon could he earn a place in the squad for the next set of T20 matches? At just 15 years old, his rapid rise has already sparked talk of a potential fast-track path, with supporters and observers pointing to a run of performances that have looked far beyond his age.

Sooryavanshi became a key figure in India’s Under-19 World Cup triumph, playing a decisive role in the team’s charge to a record sixth title. His impact was immediate and emphatic, with a blazing knock of 175 off just 80 balls as India sealed the championship. That momentum carried straight into IPL 2026, where he piled up 776 runs across 16 matches, striking at a sensational 237.31. Along the way, he also set a tournament benchmark by smashing 72 sixes, underlining the attacking freedom he brings to the top or middle order.

The teenager’s style has drawn particular attention for its fearlessness against elite pace and pace-heavy bowling units. His performances have come against some of the biggest names in world cricket, including Jasprit Bumrah, Kagiso Rabada and Pat Cummins—an impressive list that has only added weight to the arguments for his promotion to senior international cricket.

With his stocks rising after those standout displays, calls for Sooryavanshi to be considered by the senior selectors have grown louder. Many believe he should be moved quickly into the reckoning for India’s upcoming tour of Ireland, where the schedule features two T20Is in Belfast on June 26 and June 28. The timing has made his case even more compelling, as it places the teenager’s current form directly in the window where international squads are shaped.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has publicly backed Sooryavanshi’s ascent, expressing confidence that the performances will be impossible for the selectors to ignore. Saikia described him as a fresh “wonder kid” and stressed that those involved in team selection are closely following IPL matches, often in person. “Vaibhav is a new wonder kid in Indian cricket, and I’m sure he will also take the world by storm in the coming days. And all our selectors are part of the IPL tournament. Everybody, all the selectors are watching these matches very closely, and in most cases, they are also present at the venue,” Saikia said. He added that the selection group will look at what is best for the player, based on how he has been performing. “So, in the upcoming selection meetings for the Indian team’s UK trip, I’m sure the selectors will do whatever is necessary and is in his best interest, given the way he has performed,” he said.

Saikia also pointed out that while other players have made strong contributions, Sooryavanshi stands out. “Many other players performed exceedingly well. But Vaibhav is exceptional, and I am very happy that God is kind, that a new wonder kid has been presented to the Indian cricket scene at this stage, and that he will definitely cross the boundaries very soon,” he added.

After the Ireland T20Is, India are scheduled to continue their white-ball campaign with a tour of England, including five T20 matches and three ODI encounters. For Sooryavanshi, the next few weeks could be crucial—especially with the possibility of senior call-up discussions arriving right after the Ireland series window opens in Belfast.
