Royal Challengers Bengaluru speedster Bhuvneshwar Kumar etched his name into IPL history during the match against Lucknow Super Giants, becoming the first specialist fast bowler to reach the landmark of 200 appearances in the tournament. The milestone adds yet another highlight to a long, influential T20 career for the experienced pacer.
Earlier in the season, Bhuvneshwar had already set another benchmark by becoming the first quick bowler—and only the second overall player after Yuzvendra Chahal—to claim 200 IPL wickets. Now, with the 200-match feat achieved, his impact continues to be felt in every phase of the game.
Quick facts
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar became the first fast bowler to play 200 IPL matches during the RCB vs Lucknow Super Giants game.
- He had previously reached 200 IPL wickets earlier in the same season, becoming the first pacer and second player overall after Yuzvendra Chahal.
- In IPL 2026, he leads the Purple Cap standings with 17 wickets from nine matches.
- Bhuvneshwar described the 200-appearance milestone as a proud moment and said it feels extra special because his side won the title last year and is performing strongly this season.
- He named his IPL debut wicket as the most memorable moment of his career.
- He highlighted the difficulty for fast bowlers in modern T20s, especially with aggressive batting during the Powerplay.
- He attributed his success to consistently strengthening his basics throughout his career.
- With 200 IPL matches, he became only the 12th cricketer overall to reach the landmark.
On the occasion, Bhuvneshwar said the moment carried a special kind of pride. “It is indeed special. Any milestone is, really, and playing 200 matches is, in itself, a massive achievement. So, naturally, I am feeling very happy,” he said.
The veteran also pointed out that the context of the achievement has made it sweeter. In his words, “I think the best part is that I am achieving this with a team that won the trophy last year and is playing exceptionally well this season; that makes it even better.”
From milestone to mindset
Looking back across a lengthy IPL journey, Bhuvneshwar identified one early career moment as the standout. While he admitted it’s tough to choose a single memory, he settled on his first-ever IPL wicket. “It is very difficult to pick just one, but if I absolutely had to name something special, I would choose my debut wicket. My journey began so many years ago, and that very first wicket is always something special,” he said.
He then spoke about the pressures facing fast bowlers in today’s T20 landscape, particularly as batters have become more ruthless during the Powerplay. “It has certainly been demanding, especially considering the way the format itself has evolved. Given the way batsmen are changing and the aggressive approach they are adopting during the Powerplay, it is always a demanding challenge to constantly improve one's game,” he explained.
Despite the challenges, Bhuvneshwar credited his longevity to a steady adherence to fundamentals. “I believe what has worked for me personally is the consistent focus on strengthening my basics,” he added.
With the latest achievement, Bhuvneshwar joined an elite group of players who have featured in 200 or more IPL matches. He became only the 12th cricketer overall to reach the mark, joining the list led by the longest-serving campaigners in the competition.
The players already on 200-plus IPL appearances include: MS Dhoni (2008–present, 278 matches), Rohit Sharma (2008–present, 277), Virat Kohli (2008–present, 276), Ravindra Jadeja (2008–present, 264), Dinesh Karthik (2008–2024, 257), Shikhar Dhawan (2008–2024, 222), Ravichandran Ashwin (2009–2025, 221), Ajinkya Rahane (2008–present, 207), Suresh Raina (2008–2021, 205), Robin Uthappa (2008–2022, 205), Ambati Rayudu (2010–2023, 204), and now Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2011–present, 200).
