Bhuvneshwar Kumar Set for IPL History: First Pacer to 200 Matches

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is on the verge of another IPL landmark as he is set to take the field for Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Lucknow Super Giants today at the BRSABV Ekana Stadium. The experienced right-arm seamer will become the first pace bowler in Indian Premier League history to feature in 200 matches, extending an already impressive run in T20 cricket.

This season has already delivered milestones for Bhuvneshwar. On April 5, 2026, he became the first fast bowler—and just the second player overall after Yuzvendra Chahal—to reach the 200-wicket mark in IPL cricket. Known for his swing and ability to trouble batters in the powerplay and at key phases, he has carried that sharpness into the ongoing campaign.

Buoyed by his form, Bhuvneshwar currently sits atop the IPL 2026 Purple Cap standings with 17 wickets from only nine matches. With his 200th appearance on the horizon, he will also join a select group of IPL stars who have played 200 or more games, becoming the 12th player in tournament history to reach the milestone.

Players with 200-plus IPL matches:

  • MS Dhoni — 2008–present — 278
  • Rohit Sharma — 2008–present — 277
  • Virat Kohli — 2008–present — 276
  • Ravindra Jadeja — 2008–present — 264
  • Dinesh Karthik — 2008–2024 — 257
  • Shikhar Dhawan — 2008–2024 — 222
  • Ravichandran Ashwin — 2009–2025 — 221
  • Ajinkya Rahane — 2008–present — 207
  • Suresh Raina — 2008–2021 — 205
  • Robin Uthappa — 2008–2022 — 205
  • Ambati Rayudu — 2010–2023 — 204
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar — 2011–present — 199

Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Virat Kohli also heaped praise on Bhuvneshwar, placing him among the very best pace options the league has seen. Kohli described the 200-game milestone as a major achievement, emphasising that it highlights Bhuvneshwar’s longevity and consistency in the format. He also pointed to the bowler’s success across different conditions and match situations.

Kohli further underlined what sets Bhuvneshwar apart, saying his game awareness and cricketing intelligence have always been clear. He added that when you consider factors such as Bhuvneshwar’s economy, the wickets he picks up, and the number of dot balls he delivers in each game, the impact becomes truly remarkable—especially in moments where pressure is highest.
