Bhuvneshwar Kumar Takes 3/5 to Lead IPL 2026 Purple Cap Race

NEW DELHI: Veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar produced a spell for the record books, helping Royal Challengers Bengaluru register a dominant victory over Delhi Capitals while also taking the lead in the IPL 2026 Purple Cap race. The key moment came with a scorching burst of 3 wickets for just 5 runs in his three overs, a landmark that stood as his 20th three-wicket haul in the tournament—only the second pacer after Jasprit Bumrah to reach that number.

Purple Cap surge after a match-winning burst

That devastating spell propelled Bhuvneshwar to 14 wickets in eight matches, pulling him level with Chennai Super Kings’ Anshul Kamboj and Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Eshan Malinga in the wickets column. Yet it was his tighter run economy that ultimately separated him, with a rate of 7.61—better than Kamboj’s 8.56 and Malinga’s 9.44—allowing him to snatch top spot in the standings.

  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar moved to 14 wickets from 8 games to lead the Purple Cap race on economy.
  • His economy rate: 7.61 (Kamboj: 8.56, Malinga: 9.44).
  • He claimed 3 for 5 in three overs, marking his 20th IPL three-wicket haul.
  • Jofra Archer and Prince Yadav sit just behind with 13 wickets each.

Powerplay carnage and a clinical chase

The match swung decisively in the early phase as Bhuvneshwar and Josh Hazlewood dismantled Delhi Capitals’ batting order with a punishing new-ball combination. Delhi were reduced to 13 for 6 during the powerplay, and Bhuvneshwar played a central role by striking twice—first by removing debutant Sahil Parakh after setting the batter up, and then by dismissing Tristan Stubbs and captain Axar Patel later on.

Hazlewood then built on the damage, finishing with figures of 4 for 12. With that follow-up, Delhi slumped to 75 in 16.3 overs, leaving the contest effectively settled long before the innings reached its final overs.

What Bhuvneshwar said after the win

Speaking about his performance, Bhuvneshwar pointed to the conditions and the early movement he received. “When the ball swings and you get a few wickets upfront, it makes it easier,” he said. He added that the team was slightly taken aback by how much help the surface and conditions offered, but they made full use of it. With the heat taking its toll, he also joked about not pushing for an additional over, saying he was “happy with three overs” considering the temperature.

RCB close it out in style

In response to the modest target, Royal Challengers Bengaluru completed the chase comfortably in just 6.3 overs. Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal ensured the run chase stayed under control, and Kohli finished matters in emphatic fashion with consecutive sixes to seal the victory.
