In the tournament’s opening editions, the purple cap was won by a mix of pace and swing options. Sohail Tanvir set the early benchmark with 22 wickets in 2008, then RP Singh followed up with 23 for Deccan Chargers in 2009.
Pragyan Ojha took the lead in 2010, finishing with 21 wickets for Deccan Chargers. The next season saw Lasith Malinga claim top honours with 28 wickets for Mumbai Indians in 2011.
Morne Morkel’s 25-wicket haul powered him to the purple cap in 2012 for Delhi Daredevils. The following year, Dwayne Bravo exploded for 32 wickets with Chennai Super Kings to become the standout wicket-getter of the season.
Mohit Sharma then grabbed the award in 2014, taking 23 wickets for Chennai Super Kings. Bravo returned again in 2015, adding 26 wickets to his name for the same franchise.
Back-to-back momentum for key wicket-takers
Bhuvneshwar Kumar carried Sunrisers Hyderabad’s pace attack to the purple cap in 2016 with 23 wickets. He went one better in 2017, finishing on 26 to retain the top wicket-taker tag.
Andrew Tye ended the 2018 season as the leading wicket-taker, collecting 24 wickets for Kings XI Punjab. In 2019, Imran Tahir took 26 wickets for Chennai Super Kings to claim the prize.
Kagiso Rabada raised the bar in 2020 with 30 wickets for Delhi Capitals. The purple cap then stayed with Harshal Patel in 2021, as he also finished with 32 wickets for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Yuzvendra Chahal won the award in 2022, ending with 27 wickets for Rajasthan Royals. In 2023, Mohammed Shami topped the wicket charts with 28 wickets for Gujarat Titans.
The 2024 purple cap moved back to Harshal Patel, who finished with 24 wickets for Punjab Kings. Most recently in 2025, Prasidh Krishna secured the honour for Gujarat Titans by taking 25 wickets.
