CSK Bet Big on Youngsters Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma for IPL Future

Chennai Super Kings stunned the IPL market at last December’s mini-auction by investing a reported ₹14.2 crore each in two uncapped Indian prospects—Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma. The deal immediately drew attention, with the duo going on to become the joint-highest-priced uncapped Indian players ever snapped up at an auction in the league.

For a franchise long associated with the “dad’s army” label and a reputation for stability, the direction in recent seasons has been noticeably different. While injuries have influenced the availability of some senior names, the broader reshuffle has been hard to ignore. CSK has increasingly handed opportunities to younger players such as Ayush Mhatre, Urvil Patel, along with Prashant and Kartik, signalling a long-term rethink rather than a short-term patch.

That shift has been visible in the way the squad is being built. Instead of relying solely on a settled core for immediate returns, CSK appear to be prioritising early exposure for emerging talent—banking on the idea that developing these youngsters now will pay off across multiple seasons.

Hussey on CSK’s transition

Batting coach Michael Hussey has openly acknowledged that the team is currently in a transition period. He described CSK’s setup as being “quite a new team” in many respects, highlighting that several fresh faces have arrived and that the franchise wants to test promising young talent in match situations.

Hussey said CSK’s ideal plan is to identify an XI or a slightly flexible group of 11 to 12 players who feel comfortable and then allow those players to grow into clearly defined roles. The goal, he suggested, is to string together a run of form—enabling the side to build confidence and, once that happens, maintain consistency with a core group rather than keep changing the lineup.

Kartik Sharma’s patience phase

This long-term approach is also being reflected in CSK’s decision to continue backing 20-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma despite a difficult start. In his first five matches, he has endured a lean run, failing to provide the kind of returns expected early on.

Still, Hussey believes Kartik is close to turning the corner. He expressed confidence that one more game could be the breakthrough moment, insisting that Kartik has the talent to establish himself at CSK for years. Hussey further noted that Kartik is ambitious and eager to perform, adding that the franchise wants to give him as much opportunity as possible and watch him develop into his role within the squad.

In essence, CSK’s current strategy is about patience with youth—building a team that may not look settled today, but with the hope that the younger group will eventually become the foundation for the next phase of the franchise’s success.
