CSK Bowler Coach Eric Simons on Playoff Exit After 89-Run Loss to GT

AHMEDABAD: Chennai Super Kings’ road in IPL 2026 came to an abrupt end with an 89-run loss to Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday. The defeat effectively knocked CSK out of the playoff contention and also became their most lopsided defeat by runs in the tournament. For a franchise that has often relied on steadiness across campaigns, the result was a harsh reminder of how quickly momentum can swing in T20 cricket.

CSK finished the league phase with six wins and eight defeats from 14 matches. With the bat, Sanju Samson stood out most prominently, posting 477 runs across 14 innings. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad—whose scoring tempo was a topic of discussion at various points during the season—ended with 337 runs at a strike rate of 123.44.

In the bowling department, Anshul Kamboj was among CSK’s brighter performers. He ended the tournament with 21 wickets, placing him among the leading wicket-takers, though his economy rate of 10.52 highlighted the moments when the opposition pressure proved difficult to manage.

Another storyline that followed CSK throughout the year was MS Dhoni’s fitness and whether he would be available. The former captain did not feature in a single league-stage match.

Gaikwad defends CSK’s transition phase

Speaking after the match at the presentation, Gaikwad defended the team’s transition period, arguing that the squad’s youth and relative lack of experience had to be considered. “Not many people buy the fact that we are a young team in transition, with a lot of inexperienced players. More than eight to 10 players have played less than 20 games. They have got exposure. We’ve found out what areas we’re lacking,” he said.

Eric Simons calls for a detailed review

CSK bowling coach Eric Simons stressed that the next steps should include a thorough review—looking at both individual output and the overall balance of the squad. “Each player goes away with something to work on. As a bowling coach, I put reports together for each guy for the next nine months, so that they can come back and improve. As individuals, that is important,” Simons said.

He also pointed to how match conditions can sometimes expose gaps in a team’s profile. “When we play well, we’re a good unit. It has happened often in this IPL. But there are also conditions that perhaps don’t suit the makeup of our team. Those are the skills we either have to develop, or we have to recruit someone different.”

Simons concluded by linking the learning curve directly to CSK’s evolving squad. “We’re a very new side. There are a lot of young cricketers. We know a lot more about them. That’s an important learning for Stephen (Fleming) as head coach — to know the balance of the side,” he added.
