CSK Slip vs SRH but Gain One Place as NRR Improves in IPL Table

Chennai Super Kings went down by 10 runs to Sunrisers Hyderabad, but the result still proved beneficial in the IPL standings. SRH managed to defend 194 successfully, while CSK’s chase ended at 184/8. Even in defeat, CSK climbed one place in the points table after a small yet meaningful improvement to their net run rate.

Quick facts

SRH’s bowling unit kept the pressure on throughout the chase. Eshan Malinga led the attack with a tight spell that yielded figures of 3/29, and Shivang Kumar backed it up with 1/18. CSK looked set at one point and still required only 84 runs from the last 10 overs, but wickets at regular intervals and disciplined death overs ensured SRH held their nerve.

With the bat, Matthew Short top-scored for CSK on 34, while Shivam Dube contributed 21 as the chase stayed alive for stretches. However, SRH’s control in the final overs prevented CSK from converting their position into a successful run chase.

How SRH built 194/9

Earlier in the evening, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 194/9 after a largely productive innings. Abhishek Sharma provided the spark, blasting 59 off just 22 balls to lift the tempo dramatically. Heinrich Klaasen then anchored the innings with a composed 59, helping SRH reach a defendable total.

CSK’s response with the ball was powered by Jamie Overton and Anshul Kamboj, who each claimed three wickets. Their breakthroughs kept SRH from running away entirely, but the damage done at the other end—especially through Sharma—proved too much to fully undo.

How CSK moved up despite the loss

Before this game, CSK were sitting in eighth place with four points and an NRR of -0.846. The narrow nature of the defeat still shifted their numbers in a positive direction, raising their NRR to -0.780. That improvement was enough to send CSK up to seventh, surpassing Lucknow Super Giants, who also had four points but a weaker NRR of -0.804.

In such a closely packed points table, even a loss can change the order. For CSK, the margin mattered, and the net run rate swing delivered the climb.
