Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans meet again in IPL 2026 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, with the contest carrying added weight beyond two points. Their rivalry has been remarkably balanced so far, and both sides will be watching the big picture as they fight to keep their playoff hopes firmly on track.
Head-to-head: a perfectly balanced rivalry
- CSK and GT have played 8 IPL matches against each other.
- Chennai Super Kings have won 4 of those encounters.
- Gujarat Titans have also won 4 matches.
- With the record level at 4-4, Sunday’s game offers a chance for either team to create a meaningful edge in their head-to-head standings.
High-stakes at Chepauk and the Dhoni question
Heading into the second leg of IPL 2026, CSK and GT arrive at a crucial junction in the tournament. The clash on Sunday afternoon at the venue in Chennai has immediate consequences: a win helps keep top-four aspirations alive, while a loss could make the playoff push harder.
There is also continuing intrigue around MS Dhoni. The former captain has been training hard again for some time, working his way back from a calf strain. Even with anticipation building around whether he will be available for the Sunday match, coach Fleming has not provided any guarantee about his return.
GT’s bowling strength vs CSK’s momentum
Gujarat Titans bring a pace-heavy attack led by Prasidh Krishna, Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj. Ashok Sharma has also contributed strongly, taking six wickets. While the bowling unit has the weapons to trouble batters, GT have struggled with consistency—particularly in the middle overs—where maintaining the right length has been a recurring issue.
On the spin front, Rashid Khan remains GT’s most dependable option. Manav Suthar has appeared just once, while Washington Sundar has had limited impact so far.
GT’s batting: positives, but middle overs have hurt
There are bright spots in GT’s batting profile. Sai Sudharsan’s century against RCB stood out, and Gill has been a driving force with 293 runs in the season, including three half-centuries. Jos Buttler has added 231 runs as well.
However, GT’s approach has not always matched the demands of T20 cricket, where momentum and aggression can decide matches. The middle order, in particular, has struggled to cash in after solid starts. In their most recent match against RCB, GT looked set for a total beyond 230, but failed to accelerate between the 16th and 19th overs—a stretch that proved decisive. Fielding errors have also compounded matters, including a dropped catch of Virat Kohli.
Skipper Shubman Gill summed up the setback: “We didn’t get as many runs as we would have liked. Those three overs were very crucial for us.”
CSK’s season profile: bowling power, batting concerns, and recent revival
CSK’s bowling unit has been one of the standout positives this season. Anshul Kamboj has taken 14 wickets to lead the charge, while Jamie Overton has made a major contribution with nine wickets, including a four-wicket haul earlier in the tournament. Noor Ahmad has been economical, and Hosein delivered a telling impact in the previous game with a four-wicket spell.
Samson’s form and the top-order steadiness
At the moment, plenty is going right for CSK. Sanju Samson’s form has been a major boost, and the bowling attack led by Akeal Hosein produced a clinical display in their last outing.
Importantly, CSK secured that win without MS Dhoni due to a calf injury and without Ayush Mhatre, who is dealing with a hamstring issue. Mhatre has still managed 201 runs this season despite the setback.
Yet, concerns linger around CSK’s middle order. While the top order has been consistent, the middle overs have lacked intent and stability. Against Sunrisers Hyderabad, CSK were well positioned to chase 130 with eight wickets in hand and 90 balls remaining, but a collapse derailed the chase. Gaikwad is also in a lean patch, and Sarfaraz Khan, Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis have struggled to turn starts into substantial scores.
Turnaround after a slow start
After a sluggish beginning, CSK have staged a strong recovery, winning three of their last four matches. Their resurgence was highlighted by a commanding 103-run victory over Mumbai Indians, powered by Samson’s second century of the season.
With Ruturaj Gaikwad leading the side, CSK currently sit just outside the top four on six points. They will be keen to sustain the momentum and keep pushing their case in the playoff race.
GT’s dip in form and current league standing
For Gujarat Titans, the dominant theme has been missed opportunities. After winning three matches in a row, GT have suffered consecutive defeats—first a 99-run loss to Mumbai Indians, followed by a five-wicket defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Although GT are level on six points with CSK, they occupy the seventh spot because of a poor net run rate of -0.790.
