CSK’s 5-wicket win over LSG boosts IPL 2026 top-four playoff hopes

Chennai Super Kings have received a major lift in the race for the IPL 2026 playoffs after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s team edged out Lucknow Super Giants by five wickets in a thrilling Sunday encounter. Urvil Patel produced the joint-fastest half-century in IPL history, reaching fifty off just 13 deliveries, as CSK successfully chased a daunting 204-run target with 19.2 overs to spare. The result keeps CSK firmly in contention, with the five-time champions sitting fifth in the standings on 12 points. Even though Rajasthan Royals also have 12 points, CSK are placed above them due to a superior net run rate. Chennai can lock in a Top 4 finish by winning all three of their remaining league games, which would move them to 18 points. If they manage to win two of those matches, their qualification chances would become very strong with 16 points. Still, if CSK win only once, they would end up with 14 points from 14 matches, meaning their progress would then hinge on results elsewhere and, crucially, net run rate.

Urvil’s explosive knock of 65 off 23 balls powered CSK to maintain their playoff momentum, with the chase unfolding under pressure in a tense clash where the home side fought back after a shaky middle phase.

Patel matched Yashasvi Jaiswal’s benchmark for the quickest IPL fifty by an Indian batter, bringing up the milestone in 13 balls. His innings featured eight maximums and two fours, providing the momentum CSK needed as they hunted down Lucknow’s total of 204.

While Patel’s fearless batting kept the visitors well set, Lucknow managed to disrupt CSK in the middle overs by removing wickets in quick succession. That spell gave LSG a route back into the contest, tightening the chase and raising the stakes as the finish approached.

With the game entering its most anxious stage, Prashant Veer steadied CSK after surviving two dropped chances on 9, while Shivam Dube sealed the job with a composed 15 not out from just seven balls. Together, they ensured CSK crossed the line and completed the chase.

The victory propelled CSK into the top five on the points table, placing them above Rajasthan Royals on net run rate, with three league fixtures still to be played.

Earlier, Lucknow Super Giants had set the tone after being sent in to bat. Josh Inglis struck a rapid 85 off 33 balls, including ten fours and six sixes, giving LSG a blazing start.

However, English pace-bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton played a key role in turning the match, recording figures of 3/36 and triggering a slump in the middle stages. As the innings progressed, Bengal all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed then added late momentum with a cameo of 43 not out from 25 deliveries, striking three fours and three sixes to lift Lucknow’s total.
