DC vs CSK: Capitals Try to Halt Home Slide After Three Straight Losses

Delhi Capitals have to break out of a cycle of breathtaking performances followed by fragile collapses if they want to arrest a run of three straight defeats at home. They host an equally under-pressure Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League on Tuesday, with both teams sitting on eight points from nine matches. With only five games left, every result now carries added weight.

DC’s most recent outing offered some relief. On Friday night in Jaipur, they delivered a composed batting display to earn a much-needed win after suffering a hat-trick of losses. The turnaround mattered because two of those defeats had come on their own turf, leaving their dressing room with plenty to digest.

One of the setbacks at home saw Punjab Kings chase down a new high total of 265. Another exposed Delhi’s batting vulnerabilities against a sharp and threatening pace unit from Royal Challengers Bengaluru. And the most painful of the lot was a one-run defeat to Gujarat Titans at Kotla, a match DC really should have closed out.

Quick facts

  • Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings meet on Tuesday with both sides on eight points from nine games.
  • DC are coming off a win in Jaipur on Friday night after three consecutive defeats.
  • Two of DC’s recent losses happened at home, including a 265-run chase by Punjab Kings and a one-run loss to Gujarat Titans.
  • Pathum Nissanka’s form is a key positive for Delhi, alongside K L Rahul and Mitchell Starc’s impact with the ball.
  • Kuldeep Yadav has been hit for three sixes in his final over in Jaipur and is averaging 10.26 runs per over with seven wickets in nine games.
  • For CSK, MS Dhoni is not fully fit and is ruled out of the Kotla match.
  • Ruturaj Gaikwad enters the contest on the back of consecutive half-centuries.

The clearest bright spots for Delhi heading into the CSK game are the batting foundations being laid by Pathum Nissanka and the steady returns from K L Rahul. At the same time, Mitchell Starc’s pace gives the bowling unit the extra bite it has often needed in tight phases.

Still, Delhi’s bowling department has shown inconsistency. Kuldeep Yadav, in particular, will be eager to make amends after being taken to the cleaners in Jaipur, where three sixes came off his final over. So far in the tournament, he has also struggled with economy, conceding 10.26 runs per over while picking up just seven wickets across nine appearances.

Another area of concern is the output from T Nataran. As a specialist in middle-overs and the death phase, he has not managed to balance his workload with enough wicket-taking, ending with five wickets in nine games alongside a high economy rate.

Even with those issues, captain Axar Patel has maintained a level-headed approach. After Delhi’s win over Rajasthan Royals, he stressed the importance of repeating the right processes and backing the group to turn things around, praising both batting and bowling after a strong all-round showing.

CSK’s fitness and form

For Chennai, the stakes are equally sharp. Ahead of their 10th match of the season, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that M S Dhoni has not regained full fitness, which means he will miss the Kotla clash. That adds another selection challenge for a side that already knows it cannot afford further slips.

CSK, like DC, are walking a tightrope. Another loss on Tuesday would push them toward yet another premature exit, especially after they finished at the bottom of the table last season. The pressure on their campaign has been building, and this match offers little margin for experimentation.

One reason Chennai’s early season looked uneven was the lack of runs from skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. In the first half of the campaign, Sanju Samson stood out as a lone source of batting output within a relatively inexperienced-looking lineup. However, Gaikwad has now found a rhythm again, arriving at this contest following consecutive half-centuries.

Chennai’s batting conversation has also included where Urvil Patel fits in, with him set to bat at number three ahead of Sarfaraz Khan after Aayush Mhatre withdrew due to injury. The immediate opportunity is clear: a 12-ball 14 in the win over Mumbai Indians could give Urvil Patel a major confidence boost, and the same kind of lift is expected from Kartik Sharma, who struck his maiden IPL fifty on Saturday night.

Match context may also matter for morale. Two of CSK’s four victories have come against a struggling Mumbai Indians, and one of those wins was against Delhi at the Chepauk earlier in the season. Gaikwad and his team will carry confidence from that performance as they begin the return leg against DC.
