Dhoni Returns to Chepauk, But CSK’s IPL 2026 Push vs SRH Falls Short

MS Dhoni’s name has been hanging over Chennai Super Kings’ home matches all season, and for the first time in IPL 2026, the former India captain was actually spotted at a match venue on CSK matchday. The long wait at the MA Chidambaram Stadium finally seemed to end when Dhoni stepped out of the team bus and walked into Chepauk, setting off an instant wave of excitement among fans and observers alike. The question on everyone’s lips was simple: could Monday be the day the wicketkeeping legend makes his first appearance of the campaign?

That excitement, however, lasted only until the toss. As Dhoni watched from the Chepauk dressing room, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad addressed the moment with a reality check for the home crowd. With Ravi Shastri raising the key concern, Gaikwad responded with a worrying update after CSK opted to bat first against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their final home game of the league stage. “He’s still here, but he’s not fit enough to play this game,” Gaikwad said, effectively quashing the hopes of a Dhoni comeback at the ground.

Why Dhoni’s Chepauk return didn’t turn into an IPL comeback

Dhoni’s presence at the stadium was not just a sudden appearance—it followed a training session at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday. He took part in throwdown work and faced spinners for close to 40 minutes before leaving, a routine that naturally fueled speculation. Dhoni has been showing up consistently at practice sessions, but those appearances have generally been limited, suggesting that match readiness has remained a hurdle.

The only time his preparation looked more advanced than just batting through throwdowns came ahead of CSK’s match versus Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, where he even kept wickets during training. That detail had added to the optimism, and the frenzy around him had been growing. Yet on matchday, Dhoni was neither present in the playing group nor included in the XI.

Still, this time was different in one important way: Dhoni didn’t just train—he turned up at Chepauk itself. That step raised expectations even further, making the toss update sting a little more for supporters who had been waiting all season. So why did he not take the field despite being at the venue?

Reports stated that Dhoni had suffered another injury setback on top of the two back-to-back calf strains that had kept him out for large parts of the season. The new issue was a thumb injury picked up during a net session ahead of CSK’s trip to Lucknow. The management reportedly had already booked his travel plans to Lucknow, but Dhoni chose to remain in Chennai instead.

The same report also noted that while there was no visible sign of discomfort when Dhoni batted in the nets on Sunday, his decision to sit out the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad was made afterwards, with the indication that he was still not at 100 per cent fitness.

For CSK fans, the waiting game is not over yet. The franchise still has one more league match to play, against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. If CSK manage to qualify, another door could open for Dhoni’s return—leaving supporters to keep their fingers crossed for a late-season comeback.
