Ferreira’s calm ball-by-ball 52* guides RR to end PBKS winning run

Donovan Ferreira described his first genuinely match-winning moment in the IPL as something he simply approached “ball by ball”, and Rajasthan Royals proved him right on Tuesday evening. The South Africa allrounder struck an unbeaten 52 off 26 deliveries as RR overhauled Punjab Kings’ total to end the visitors’ winning run, securing a six-wicket victory and handing himself Player of the Match honours.

Speaking after the chase, Ferreira said he stayed calm throughout and treated it like a familiar routine. “Just kept my mind nice and clear,” he told the broadcaster. “Exactly the same as when I was a kid playing with a toy truck.”

Ferreira’s night carried extra significance because it came after a recent move in the squad. He was brought into the RR set-up ahead of IPL 2026, arriving from Delhi Capitals in a deal worth INR 1 crore. Earlier in the campaign, he had already shown glimpses of impact, including a 69 from 44 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad, though that innings had arrived when the outcome was already tilting and the runs could not change the bigger picture.

This time, the context was different. RR began their chase of 223 with the scoreboard moving in a controlled manner, and the contest was far from settled when Ferreira walked out at 123 for 3 in the 12th over. With RR assessed as only around 35% chances to win by ESPNcricinfo’s forecaster, the innings demanded composure rather than fireworks.

Ferreira delivered exactly that, building a steady platform through a match-shaping unbroken stand. Alongside Shubham Dubey, he stitched an unbeaten partnership of 77 off 32 balls, with the duo taking RR past the finishing line and lifting the team from fourth to third in the IPL 2026 points table.

Ferreira explained how he tried to steer the mindset of the chase as the required run-rate crept into a manageable zone. “I kept on telling the guys, ‘we need to be positive, it’s not that hard to get that score,’” he said. “We need to keep showing intent, we mustn’t be predictable and swing every ball. So let’s be calculative and play good cricket shots.”

RR’s momentum had been laid by the foundation set earlier in the innings. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi contributed 43 from 16 balls, while Yashasvi Jaiswal struck 51 off 27 deliveries, giving RR the cushion they needed. With the last eight overs asking for roughly 12 runs per over, Ferreira felt the situation allowed him to plan his batting in clearer phases, knowing that one productive over could swing the chase decisively in RR’s favour.

That swing happened in the closing stretch. In the 18th over, Arshdeep Singh conceded 17 runs, and in the 19th, Lockie Ferguson went for 16. With the target effectively under control, Ferreira sealed the job with four balls to spare, finishing the chase by clearing the ropes with a six over mid-on off Marco Jansen in the 20th.

Asked again about his approach, Ferreira returned to the same theme of not getting carried away. “I think it’s important to really just take it ball by ball and not look too far ahead,” he said. “I just kept on reminding myself, it’s only 12s [per over] or 10s [per over] required, so just one good over and then the game becomes a lot simpler.”

He also credited the pressure-sharing role played by the man at the other end. “Luckily for me, Shubham came in and took a lot of pressure off me and played a crucial knock over there,” Ferreira added. “And I knew if I just stay there, not lose my wicket, then I can catch up in one over. So luckily for me, that happened in the last over of Lockie [Ferguson]’s bowling.”

Ferreira further revealed that RR had discussed the importance of more than just relying on their explosive top order. Heading into the game, the team had been conscious that they could not depend solely on their prolific and young opening pair of Jaiswal and Sooryavanshi to consistently set up victories. In that context, the middle-order delivery—led by Ferreira and supported by Dubey—became a key part of the plan.

Beyond the main partnership, Riyan Parag also made a meaningful contribution with a quick 29 off 16 balls. It was a day when RR made a slight adjustment to their composition by leaving both Shimron Hetmyer and Ravi Bishnoi on the bench, giving other batters the chance to shape the chase.

Ferreira said he was pleased with the overall balance. “I’m really pleased that I’m hitting the ball well. Shubham came in and did well too. And Jaiswal and them are always setting it up in the first couple of overs,” he remarked. “But it’s important that when it’s your day you need to step up and win the match for the team.”

With the tournament still long, he emphasised the need for multiple contributors to keep RR in contention. “You need to win games to stay in the top four. It’s a long tournament so we just keep reminding ourselves that different guys should put their hands up. We can’t just rely on our openers who have been really good for us.”

RR’s win has them placed third in the table with 12 points from nine matches. Next, they return to Jaipur to host Delhi Capitals on May 1, before a week-long break. After that interlude, they will play Gujarat Titans again at home on May 9.
