Gaikwad Fined INR 24 Lakh for CSK Slow Over-Rate vs Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026

Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has been hit with a fine of INR 24 lakh after his side clocked a slow over-rate during their IPL 2026 meeting with Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The penalty comes under the league’s Code of Conduct, specifically Article 2.22, which addresses minimum over-rate breaches. It was Chennai’s second such offence of the season, following an earlier over-rate infraction in Match 18.

With that second breach on the record, Gaikwad faced the steepest sanction, while the rest of the Chennai playing XI—also including the Impact Player—were fined either INR 6 lakh or an amount equal to 25 percent of their respective match fees, whichever works out to be less. The ruling ensured that the over-rate issue was treated as a collective concern rather than something limited to the captain alone.

For Gaikwad personally, the fine adds another chapter to an IPL 2026 campaign that has been both difficult and widely debated. As captain and opening batter, he was tasked with steering CSK through what the franchise described as a “transition phase,” a stretch that was repeatedly disrupted by injuries early on. Even so, attention increasingly turned to his batting output and what many observers perceived as an absence of urgency at key moments. In the end, CSK failed to make it to the playoffs, finishing the league stage with 6 wins and 8 defeats.

The frustration at the Narendra Modi Stadium went well beyond the disciplinary setback. Gujarat Titans controlled the contest from start to finish, delivering a decisive 89-run win and formally knocking Chennai out of the IPL 2026 playoff chase. After the Titans were asked to bat first, their batting unit produced a sustained barrage that left the CSK bowlers struggling to settle.

Shubman Gill led the charge with a knock of 64 off 37 balls, carving out a steady stream of boundaries while keeping the scoring rate under constant pressure. Sai Sudharsan then continued the momentum in standout fashion, registering 84 off 53 deliveries and adding class to the innings as the Titans built toward a big total. Jos Buttler sealed the innings with the kind of late acceleration that T20 contests demand, finishing unbeaten on 57 from just 23 balls as Gujarat raced to 229/4.

Chennai’s chase never truly got back on track once they lost early wickets. Mohammed Siraj made the early inroads by dismissing Sanju Samson for a duck and then removing Gaikwad soon after, leaving the chase in trouble at the start of its middle overs. Shivam Dube offered a brief spark with a rapid cameo of 47 off 17 balls, but the innings could not be stabilized and the remainder of the batting order crumbled under pressure.

Rashid Khan and Kagiso Rabada then brought the innings to a swift end, with CSK dismissed for 140 in 13.4 overs. The result firmly secured Gujarat Titans’ standing in the top two and closed the door on CSK’s playoff hopes for IPL 2026, while Gaikwad’s over-rate fine ensured the match would be remembered for reasons beyond the on-field margin.
