Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad landed in the record books in an unfortunate way after producing the slowest fifty of IPL 2026 during a difficult match against Gujarat Titans at Chepauk. His fifty took 49 deliveries, marking the least-rapid half-century of the season and the slowest in the Impact Sub era since 2023. The previous slowest fifty this campaign came from Rishabh Pant, who struck a half-century off 43 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Hyderabad.
The innings was also one of the slowest fifties by a CSK batter in the franchise’s IPL history, sitting alongside former names such as Parthiv Patel, Matthew Hayden and Murali Vijay. Even though Gaikwad’s knock of 74 not out off 60 balls helped CSK post 158 for 7, it underlined a wider batting struggle for the yellow brigade on the day.

On a surface in lively Chepauk fashion—one that offered sharp bounce—Gujarat Titans set the tone early. Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada got plenty of movement off their releases and extracted steep carry, forcing mistakes and keeping the CSK batters pinned down. CSK slipped to 28 for 3 during the Powerplay, a start that immediately pushed Gaikwad into a stabilising role rather than an attacking one.
With wickets continuing to fall, Gaikwad’s approach turned increasingly cautious. Dot balls accumulated, and CSK didn’t reach fifty until the 12th over. Although the captain eventually found rhythm late, launching a few boundaries and clearing the ropes with sixes, the delayed acceleration meant the innings never truly built momentum.
In a season where plenty of matches have tilted toward big totals, Gaikwad’s knock stood out as a reminder that pitch and conditions can still dictate tempo. On this occasion, CSK were unable to adapt quickly enough to the challenge posed at Chepauk.
