Gaikwad Sets CSK Playoff Target After Loss to LSG Tightens IPL Race

Ruturaj Gaikwad acknowledged that Chennai Super Kings have landed in a tough but clear-cut situation in IPL 2026 after a seven-wicket loss to Lucknow Super Giants. The defeat has left CSK sitting sixth in the points standings, with 12 league games completed and the team holding a record of six wins and six defeats. With the race for the top four tightening, Chennai’s path now looks demanding: they are likely to have to win both of their remaining matches, while also monitoring their Net Run Rate closely to keep their playoff chances mathematically alive.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Gaikwad tried to keep the focus on control and improvement despite the setback. The CSK captain said the challenge ahead is essentially about getting the next steps right—recovering, identifying what needs fixing, and adjusting quickly to conditions as the tournament moves on. He stressed that while the situation may sound pressure-filled, the task itself is straightforward: win each match and let results do the rest.

“Well, first challenge is getting to Chennai. It’s a long flight. After that, just make sure we comeback and improve what are the areas we need to improve and yes, try and adapt and assess the conditions as quickly as possible and it is a simple calculation for us. Win each and every game for how much ever games we play. So I think nothing simple. I mean, it is simple, nothing complicated. So quite easy here on for us. Nothing to worry about. Just make sure we have a good day. Make it count whoever has a good day and hope that we hope that we turn the things around,” Gaikwad said.

Lucknow delivered the kind of performance that shifts momentum firmly in their favour. The match, played at the Ekana Stadium, became a significant blow to CSK’s playoff push as LSG outplayed them to claim the win by seven wickets. For Lucknow, it was also a statement start to the campaign for one of their key pace options: left-arm fast bowler Akash Singh, playing his first IPL match of the season, produced a match-winning spell of 3/26. He struck at crucial moments, removing Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, and Urvil Patel, with his short-pitched pace and sharp execution proving difficult to handle on a surface that offered life to the bowlers.

Chennai’s innings struggled from the outset. They managed just 37/2 during the powerplay, unable to convert early opportunities into a platform. Even a late push led by Kartik Sharma—who made a fighting 71 off 42 balls—could not generate enough momentum or pressure to force a tougher chase for Lucknow. CSK’s total left the visitors with a target that looked very achievable once the openers took control.

In reply, Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis set the tone immediately. The pair built a dominant opening partnership of 135 runs in just 11.4 overs, taking the game away from CSK with aggressive intent and clean strike rotation. Marsh was the standout, smashing 90 off 38 deliveries. His innings included four straight sixes off Anshul Kamboj in a brutal over that effectively decided the contest, leaving CSK chasing a mountain that kept getting steeper.

With the match already tilting heavily towards Lucknow, Nicholas Pooran later completed the chase in the 17th over, and LSG comfortably reached the target to secure victory. The result further tightens the playoff picture in IPL 2026, placing Chennai under added urgency as they look to finish the league phase strongly.
