Gaikwad’s CSK captaincy questioned after RCB rout leaves title hopes shaky

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are stuck near the foot of the IPL 2026 points table, and their problems worsened on Sunday with a heavy 43-run defeat at the hands of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The five-time champions were outplayed at M Chinnaswamy Stadium as RCB piled on 250 runs and CSK never looked settled in pursuit.

Quick facts

  • CSK suffered a 43-run loss to RCB at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
  • RCB made 250 runs; CSK could not chase the total.
  • Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 41 runs in three games, with a top score of 28.
  • Rajat Patidar and Tim David added an unbeaten 99-run partnership off 35 balls.
  • CSK lost key wickets (including Gaikwad, Sanju Samson and Ayush Mhatre) within the first three overs.
  • The defeat was CSK’s third straight loss, after setbacks to Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings.
  • Michael Vaughan criticised Gaikwad’s form and CSK’s bowling setup.
  • Ahead of IPL 2026, CSK traded Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran; they brought in Sanju Samson.
  • CSK are scheduled to play Delhi Capitals on Saturday, April 11.
  • MS Dhoni’s participation will depend on a fitness test later this week.

CSK’s batting struggled for momentum, and their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has not been able to lift the innings consistently. In three matches, he has managed only 41 runs, with his best output being 28, and the side have also been missing the stabilising presence of MS Dhoni and Dewald Brevis.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan was blunt in his assessment of Gaikwad’s approach. He suggested the 29-year-old has been too visibly swinging his arms during play, arguing that the technique and execution have not looked convincing enough to change CSK’s fortunes.

RCB’s innings swung the match early, with CSK conceding momentum after losing wickets in a rapid spell. Gaikwad, Sanju Samson and Ayush Mhatre all fell inside the opening three overs, leaving CSK with too much to do from the start.

Then RCB accelerated through their middle phase, powered by Rajat Patidar and Tim David. The pair produced an unbeaten 99-run stand off just 35 deliveries, taking the game away from CSK’s grasp and setting a chase that was always going to be difficult.

Because the early damage was already done, CSK never truly threatened once the target was posted. With the result against RCB, CSK slid to their third consecutive defeat, following losses to Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings—an ongoing run that has left their campaign under intense pressure.

Vaughan’s view on CSK’s problems

Vaughan believes CSK’s struggles in IPL 2026 will continue unless their bowling improves significantly. In his comments, he highlighted how the fielding and planning have looked uncertain, and he pointed to a lack of variation and “mystery” in the attack.

He also linked CSK’s current form to a notable shift from the team’s earlier winning template. When CSK were successful in the tournament in the past, Vaughan argued they had the best kind of leadership and match-control behind the stumps from Dhoni, describing how Dhoni would signal, adjust and then go in to bat at No.6 or 7 to turn games.

According to Vaughan, CSK’s real concern is the bowling unit, and that is why the top order has been unable to provide enough stability. He suggested teams are currently running around without clear answers, while CSK’s attack is not delivering the same impact that typically accompanies a title-winning side.

Jadeja trade questioned

Before the IPL 2026 season began, CSK traded both Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to the Rajasthan Royals, while also bringing Sanju Samson into the squad. Vaughan called the decision questionable, arguing that Jadeja’s experience could have been crucial for CSK during difficult stretches like the one they are now enduring.

He expressed surprise at allowing Jadeja to leave, saying the franchise is losing a key source of experience within the group. Vaughan also stressed that leadership and know-how are not limited to batting—he felt Jadeja’s value with the ball and overall tactical understanding are exactly what younger squads need alongside them.

CSK currently sit 10th in the points table, and their next assignment comes against Delhi Capitals on Saturday, April 11. MS Dhoni could figure in that match if he clears the fitness test later this week, offering CSK a possible lift as they look to halt the slide.
