India head coach Gautam Gambhir was present at an IPL 2026 fixture in New Delhi on Friday, watching Kolkata Knight Riders take on Delhi Capitals. Gambhir sat with India selector RP Singh during the contest, and the two were seen having an extended conversation as the match unfolded. The coach was also spotted engaging with BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla.
It was the first time Gambhir had turned up at an IPL match since his earlier mentoring role with KKR during IPL 2024, a campaign that culminated in the franchise lifting its third league title. With BCCI selectors making a habit of attending games throughout IPL 2026 to scout up-and-coming talent, Gambhir’s appearance quickly became a talking point among fans. Gambhir had led KKR to the IPL trophy in 2024 before taking over as India head coach later that same year.
On the field, Pathum Nissanka played a key knock for Delhi Capitals, reaching a half-century. However, KKR’s spin attack ensured the visitors were kept under control, restricting Delhi to 142/8. The trio of Anukul Roy (2/31), Sunil Narine (1/17), and Varun Chakravarthy (0/28) tightened the middle overs and curbed the scoring pace, making it difficult for Delhi to accelerate.
Kolkata also received support from their quicks and all-round bowling options, with Kartik Tyagi (2/25), Vaibhav Arora (1/29), and Cameron Green (1/12) adding important wickets to the pressure. Still, Delhi’s total looked significantly more competitive thanks to Ashutosh Sharma, who struck 39 runs off 28 balls, including three fours and three sixes—an innings that prevented the Capitals from finishing on a far smaller score.
Chasing 143, KKR got the job done comfortably, reaching the target in 14.2 overs to win by eight wickets over Delhi Capitals.
