Gill and Sudharsan Fire GT Past RR in Historic Qualifier 2 Chase

Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals played out IPL 2026 Qualifier 2 at Mullanpur on Friday, May 29, and the match delivered a series of landmark statistical moments. The Titans’ 215—posted as the highest total by a team in an IPL play-off—also turned into the most imposing chase ever successfully completed in the post-season, eclipsing the 204 run target chased by PBKS against MI in the 2025 Qualifier 2 at Ahmedabad. Notably, this was also Gujarat’s own best successful run-chase in IPL play-offs. Their previous 200-plus chases had come in back-to-back encounters against DC last year: 204 in Ahmedabad and 200 in Delhi.

For Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, the season’s momentum only sharpened further. Their partnership numbers now sit among the very best in men’s T20 cricket, with 11 century stands between them in only 48 innings—the most by any pair for any wicket in the format. In doing so, they moved beyond three duos who previously owned the top marks with ten or more hundred-plus partnerships: Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli (63 innings), and the combinations of Babar Azam with Mohammad Rizwan (75 innings), plus Kohli and AB de Villiers (77 innings). The pair have also reached eight century partnerships for the opening wicket, which is the joint-highest tally in men’s T20 alongside Babar and Rizwan.

The impact of their starts was measurable in the playoffs as well. With 167 runs added by the Gujarat openers, they produced the highest-ever stand in IPL play-offs for any wicket, bettering the 159-run benchmark set by Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay for CSK against RCB in the 2011 final at Chennai. Their dominance in this phase is not just a one-off: they previously combined for a 138-run opening stand in the 2023 Qualifier 2 at home against MI. As a result, they have become the only batting pair to register two century stands in IPL play-offs.

Their overall season output has been just as striking. In IPL 2026, Gill and Sudharsan have accumulated 886 runs together as a pair, the fourth-highest total for any duo across a single IPL campaign. They also occupy third place on the list, having amassed 912 runs in 2025. Across IPL 2026 specifically, the two have already built four century stands, a joint-second-best figure for any edition—matching the number of century partnerships produced in 2019 by David Warner and Jonny Bairstow, and in 2023 by Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers lead the all-time chart, having produced five century stands in 2016.

Another set of figures underline how rare their scoring has been for an IPL season. In terms of partnership runs in a single edition (for any wicket), their 2026 pairing has placed them among the top performers. Gill also added a personal milestone to the day’s story, becoming the first batter to record multiple hundreds in IPL play-offs. His 129 against MI in the 2023 Qualifier 2 still stands as the highest individual score in this particular category. Gill also became the first captain to score a century in IPL play-offs. The previous best for a skipper in this phase belonged to David Warner and Rajat Patidar, who made 93 not out each—Warner for one match against GL in 2016 Qualifier 2, and Patidar against GT in IPL 2026 Qualifier 1.

Speed of conversion was another headline number. Gill required 47 balls to reach his hundred, making it the fastest century for Gujarat in the IPL and also the quickest century in IPL play-offs overall. He surpassed his own 49-ball hundred against MI in 2023, and also moved ahead of two other instances where batters reached the milestone on 49 deliveries: Wriddhiman Saha in the 2014 final against PBKS, and Rajat Patidar in the 2022 Eliminator against LSG.

Gill’s contribution as a leader was equally notable. This was his second IPL hundred as captain, and only two other players have managed multiple tons while holding the captaincy in the tournament: Virat Kohli, with five, and KL Rahul, with three.

Sudharsan’s day included a statistical marker as well. He was dismissed hit-wicket for the second time in consecutive outings, and for the third time across his IPL career. No other batter has been dismissed hit-wicket more than once in a single tournament history to that extent. His three hit-wicket dismissals are the joint-most in men’s T20 cricket, level with Andre Russell and Shoaib Malik.

There was also a wider context to Gujarat’s high-scoring trend across editions. Four players have now totalled 700-plus runs in two separate IPL seasons, with Gill and Sudharsan joining the group in their latest campaigns. Gill has done it in 2023 and 2026, while Sudharsan now matches the feat in 2025 and 2026. The first players to achieve this were Chris Gayle (2012 and 2013) and Kohli (2016 and 2024).

Sudharsan’s consistency in 2026 has been reflected by his number of 50-plus knocks. He has registered nine such scores in IPL 2026, which is the joint second-most by any player in a single edition. David Warner has also produced nine in both 2016 and 2019, while Kohli’s 2016 season remains the benchmark for most 50-plus scores with 11.

As the tournament moved toward its closing chapters, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi capped off a record-breaking campaign in style. He faced 440 balls to finish the season with 1000 IPL runs, making him the fastest to reach the mark, with Andre Russell next best at 545 deliveries. Among Indian batters, the previous quickest route to 1000 belonged to Virender Sehwag, who needed 604 balls.

Sooryavanshi’s speed is matched by the way he has handled the milestone across innings. In terms of time measured by innings, he is tied for the joint second-fastest to 1000 runs alongside Lendl Simmons, behind Shaun Marsh, who reached it in 21 innings. The next names on that list are Devon Conway (24), Matthew Hayden (25), and Sai Sudharsan.

His raw volume and efficiency have stood out across the season. The 15-year-old finished with 776 runs, which ranks as the fifth-highest total by any player in an IPL edition. In the broader league landscape, there have been 480 instances of a batter posting 300-plus runs in a single IPL season. Within that group, Sooryavanshi’s 2026 runs have arrived at the highest strike rate of 237.3.

Sooryavanshi’s campaign also shaped the record books for the entire tournament. IPL 2026 became the first men’s T20 competition in which three different players—Sooryavanshi, Gill, and Sudharsan—each crossed 700 runs in the same year. It also marks the first time that two players from the same team achieved that threshold together, with Gill and Sudharsan doing it for GT.

Boundary hitting was another striking element of Sooryavanshi’s run. He struck 135 boundaries in IPL 2026—72 sixes and 63 fours—setting the highest boundary total for anyone in a single IPL season. The previous record was held by Jos Buttler, who struck 128 boundaries (45 sixes and 83 fours) in 2022. Kohli’s 122 boundaries (38 sixes and 84 fours) in 2016 were next best prior to this season’s mark.

Even his dismissals add to the uniqueness of his edition. Sooryavanshi has been out three times while scoring in the 90s, a joint-highest figure in the IPL, with David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, KL Rahul, and Ruturaj Gaikwad also having three each. That count is also a joint-most in an edition, and for Maxwell’s part the three came during his 2014 season.
