Gill Blasts GT: “Didn’t Deserve to Win” After Fielding Woes Against KKR

Shubman Gill pointed to Gujarat Titans’ faltering fielding as the defining factor behind their 29-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders in a high-scoring IPL 2026 encounter at Eden Gardens on Saturday. Gill argued that GT “didn’t deserve to win” after the team spilled multiple chances, even though their batting effort in the chase looked capable for most of the innings. The defeat also brought an end to Gujarat’s five-match winning run, keeping KKR’s playoff hopes alive.

In reply to a target of 248, Gujarat finished on 218/4, with Gill driving the charge through a well-judged 85. Jos Buttler contributed 57 and Sai Sudharsan remained unbeaten on 53, but the chase ultimately fell short. For Gill, the batting was not the problem on the day—missed opportunities in the field swung the match firmly toward KKR.

Speaking after the game, the Titans captain said the wicket offered a decent platform and that Gujarat would have been closer had they taken their chances. “Looking at the wicket, 200-210 was par score but we dropped too many catches. Pitch was good, the odd one was stopping but I felt we batted well to get to the score we did,” Gill said, underscoring that the total was reachable if not for the costly lapses.

Those fielding errors proved decisive as KKR made Gujarat pay for every reprieve. Finn Allen was dropped twice before turning the pressure back onto the Titans with a stunning 93 off just 35 balls, smashing 10 sixes in the process. Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Cameron Green also benefited from missed chances earlier in their innings, and both went on to deliver unbeaten half-centuries to lift the hosts.

Gill acknowledged that Gujarat’s performance didn’t match the standards they had set earlier in the tournament, particularly in terms of precision in the field. “No concerns but our fielding could’ve been a lot better. We set a certain standard and dropping 3 sitters – we didn’t deserve to win this one,” he said, reflecting on how the match slipped away from GT despite their solid batting.

Even with the loss, Gill suggested the defeat could act as a timely warning ahead of the playoffs. “Looking at it that way, best to have a game like this now than in the Qualifiers,” he added, indicating that the team can use the setback to tighten up before the business end of the season.

Earlier during the chase, Gujarat looked well placed and in control for long stretches. Gill set the tone immediately, striking five fours and seven sixes in his 49-ball 85. Buttler, after getting off to a slower start, found his rhythm as the innings progressed, while Sudharsan showed determination after being briefly retired hurt following a blow to the elbow. He returned later to add crucial runs and complete a battling half-century.

With the score reading 177/1 after 16 overs, Gujarat still seemed on track to chase down the target, but KKR’s Sunil Narine delivered a turning spell that shifted momentum back to the home side. That swing proved important as the chase lost momentum and KKR tightened the contest in the final overs.

KKR had earlier posted 247/2 after being put in to bat by Gill. Finn Allen’s explosive start gave the innings direction, and when Raghuvanshi struck an unbeaten 82 alongside Cameron Green’s unbeaten 52, the hosts built a total that became their highest score of the season. The combination of aggressive batting and timely finishing ensured KKR set a demanding target for Gujarat.

The result leaves Gujarat Titans second in the IPL 2026 points table with 16 points from 13 matches, while KKR moved closer to the playoff positions with the kind of win that keeps their campaign on track. After the match, Gill said the team will focus on recovery before their next assignment, beginning with rest and travel back to Ahmedabad. “I think rest and recover for a couple of days, travel back to Ahmedabad, see how the wicket is and then plan accordingly (for the next game),” Gill said.
