Gill’s 64 as GT batter CSK by 89 runs; Orange and Purple cap tables shift

It was a thoroughly one-sided evening for Gujarat Titans (GT) as they brushed aside Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 89 runs in Ahmedabad on Thursday of IPL 2026, with GT’s dominance reflected not just on the scoreboard but across both the Orange and Purple Cap standings.

Key takeaways

  • Shubman Gill’s 64 off 37 balls moved him to 616 runs and placed him at the top of the Orange Cap list at one stage during the match.
  • After Sai Sudharsan’s 84 off 53 balls, he finished the game top of the Orange Cap with 638 runs.
  • GT’s Kagiso Rabada matched RCB’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar at the summit of the Purple Cap with 24 wickets after taking 3 for 32 versus CSK.
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar remains ahead on economy (7.70 versus Rabada’s 9.18), so the Purple Cap effectively stays with him.
  • Vaibhav Sooryavanshi sits third in the batting chart with 579 runs, while Mitchell Marsh (563) and Heinrich Klaasen (555) occupy the next spots.

Orange Cap leaderboard

Shubman Gill was the first to set the tone in the chase of the Orange Cap, striking 64 off 37 deliveries to reach 616 runs for the season. At the start of the game, he had 552 runs, only slightly ahead of his opening partner B Sai Sudharsan, who was on 554.

That early cushion held for the opening partnership of 125 runs, as Gill scored more than Sudharsan while the pair were together, which saw the cap standings move in his favour.

However, as Sudharsan’s innings progressed, the lead changed hands again. By the time he was dismissed, Gill had slipped back to second place, and Sudharsan surged to the top with an 84 off 53 balls that took him to 638 runs.

With that outcome, the top of the Orange Cap chart remained heavily tilted towards GT—then followed by the Rajasthan Royals (RR). Vaibhav Sooryavanshi occupied third spot with 579 runs, with Mitchell Marsh of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on 563, and Heinrich Klaasen of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) rounding off the top five on 555.

Everything could shift again on Friday night, when SRH take on RCB. Klaasen will have another opportunity to add runs, while Virat Kohli—currently sixth with 542—can also close the gap. The SRH pair of Abhishek Sharma (eighth with 507) and Ishan Kishan (one place below him with 490) are also in positions where a strong outing could quickly alter the standings.

Purple Cap leaderboard

RCB’s pace bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar had looked as if he was moving away from the rest of the field, but GT’s Kagiso Rabada hauled the momentum back. Rabada returned figures of 3 for 32 against CSK to draw level at the top with Bhuvneshwar on 24 wickets.

Even so, Bhuvneshwar continues to hold the advantage because of his economy rate: 7.70 compared with Rabada’s 9.18. That means the Purple Cap remains with Bhuvneshwar for now, and he will get another chance to extend his tally when SRH play on Friday.

Rabada’s impact arrived later in the innings. By the end of the seventh over, CSK were 63 for 5, and Rabada had one wicket compared with Mohammed Siraj’s three. Siraj’s Purple Cap momentum wasn’t really present in the standings this season, but his three-wicket haul lifted his total to 17 wickets and moved him up to seventh place.

Alongside Rabada, a couple of other bowlers made notable jumps inside the top four. Anshul Kamboj took the wicket of Sai Sudharsan to reach 21 wickets and claim the third spot. Rashid Khan then became the third GT bowler to register a three-for on the night, pushing him to fourth place with 19 wickets.

Between the leading quartet and Siraj are RR’s Jofra Archer and KKR’s Kartik Tyagi, who both sit with 18 wickets each.
