Harbhajan Singh questions Gujarat Titans’ dugout conduct amid IPL coaching debate

Modern cricket keeps raising the bar, and while players are expected to sharpen their skills to match the pace and complexity of the current era, head coaches are also being judged on what they bring during the match itself. The Indian Premier League—the biggest platform for franchise T20 cricket—has nudged teams away from the old idea of a distant, “remote-controlled” approach. With contests becoming more tactical and every phase, and even each ball, able to swing momentum, the dugout now demands sharper, louder and more continuous input from top minds. That trend mirrors what many fans associate with football management, where coaching often looks like an active, on-field dialogue rather than silent direction.

One figure who has drawn attention for his intensity and for the way he can influence conversations and decisions in the coaching box is Ashish Nehra. The former India fast bowler, now the head coach of Gujarat Titans, has long been known for a high-energy presence that carries through to his coaching. During his playing days, Nehra’s temperament was often described as “jack-in-the-box,” a label that matched his restless drive—even though his career was repeatedly disrupted by injury setbacks.

Nehra the ‘football coach’

Harbhajan Singh, the celebrated India spinner and a JioStar expert, pointed to a distinct similarity between Nehra’s coaching approach and that of a football manager. In his view, the common thread is relentless energy and constant communication—both with players on the pitch and with those around the team during different moments of the game. Harbhajan praised Nehra’s ability to lift the atmosphere wherever he goes, and described him as someone who ensures comfort not only for himself but for everyone working alongside him.

“Ashish Nehra is the only person who makes the atmosphere comfortable anywhere, anytime. Wherever he goes, he makes everyone around him feel at ease. Not just himself, but everyone who works with him. One of the finest human beings you will ever meet. If you are with him, you are guaranteed to have a good time. His biggest contribution to Gujarat Titans is keeping everyone united. That is Ashish Nehra. He is like a football coach. He never sits still. Throughout the entirety of a match, he will find a player and keep talking to him. Nehra ji has a great understanding of the game. The work he has done with Gujarat Titans is commendable,” Harbhajan said on JioHotstar’s ‘Champions Waali Commentary’.

Harbhajan’s remarks underline why Nehra’s role matters beyond tactics and training routines—particularly in building a constructive, united environment in the Gujarat Titans dressing room. In a long IPL campaign, that kind of cohesion can translate directly into how a side performs on the field, especially when pressure rises and plans need to be adjusted quickly.

Gujarat Titans, who began their IPL journey in 2022, enjoyed a standout title-winning run under Nehra’s guidance, with Hardik Pandya—then the franchise’s captain—helping drive the team’s momentum. The same leadership formula helped them reach a consecutive final in 2023, though they eventually fell short against a seasoned Chennai Super Kings outfit. Even when 2024 turned difficult under a young captain, Shubman Gill, the franchise continued to place its trust in Nehra’s leadership and in the longer-term direction he has been steering the team towards.

That faith began to show even more clearly in 2025. Since their debut, the Nehra-led group managed to secure a third qualification in just four years, reinforcing the idea that their structure and belief are producing results as the seasons stack up.

Beyond the numbers, Nehra’s on-field communication has become a talking point in itself—highlighting a coaching standard that other teams may look to emulate. The franchise’s current season has also reflected that same mindset. After a shaky opening, the Gujarat Titans have bounced back strongly, collecting three straight wins to move into 6th place on the points table. They will now aim to carry that momentum forward against an under-pressure Mumbai Indians side tonight.
