Hardik Pandya Fitness in Focus as Mumbai Indians Face Punjab Kings in Dharamsala

Mumbai Indians are scheduled to take on Punjab Kings in Dharamsala, with the visitors aiming to salvage some pride after being formally knocked out of the IPL 2026 playoff hunt. Yet, the biggest talking point before the contest is the uncertain fitness of Mumbai captain Hardik Pandya.

Pandya missed Mumbai’s last two outings against Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru due to persistent back spasms. With that issue still lingering, he is now considered highly unlikely to play against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala.

Quick facts

  • Mumbai Indians face Punjab Kings in Dharamsala.
  • Hardik Pandya is a major doubt due to ongoing back spasms.
  • Pandya missed matches vs Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
  • He did not travel to Dharamsala and stayed in Mumbai for recovery.
  • Suryakumar Yadav is leading MI as interim captain, but his availability is also unclear.
  • Suryakumar missed the trip after becoming a father to a baby girl with Devisha Shetty.
  • Punjab Kings are 4th, chasing the final playoff spot; Mumbai are 9th and officially eliminated.
  • A Punjab win would take them to 15 points and boost their top-four push.
  • Mumbai can still upset the race by causing an upset in Dharamsala.

Instead of joining the rest of the squad for the Dharamsala trip, Pandya remained in Mumbai to continue his rehabilitation. He also shared videos showing himself completing a demanding three-hour solo training session at the Reliance Corporate Park, a sign that his recovery work is ongoing and not yet complete.

Interim captain, second fitness question

With Pandya out of the frame, Suryakumar Yadav has taken over the leadership duties as Mumbai’s interim captain. Even so, there is a separate question mark over whether he will be available, following a recent personal milestone.

Suryakumar stayed back in Mumbai after becoming a father, welcoming a baby girl with his wife, Devisha Shetty. The situation is reminiscent of what happened before Mumbai’s previous match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur, when he was also absent from the squad initially but then travelled separately on match day to take part in the game.

A similar scenario could be possible again ahead of the Dharamsala fixture, though nothing is confirmed yet. For now, Mumbai’s leadership planning is being forced to move with uncertainty on two fronts.

On the table, Punjab Kings currently occupy fourth place and are holding the last available playoff position. Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, sit ninth and have already been officially eliminated from the tournament, which removes any chance of qualification but does not reduce the stakes for the teams chasing the top four.

If Punjab Kings win on the night, they will move to 15 points, tightening their grip on the top four and increasing the pressure on rivals such as Chennai and Rajasthan who are still in contention. Even without playoff hopes, Mumbai can still play spoiler—pulling off an upset would directly dent Punjab’s playoff momentum.
