Mumbai Indians have been handed a timely lift ahead of their heavyweight IPL meeting with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with captain Hardik Pandya expected to travel to Raipur after missing the previous contest because of a back spasm. Pandya was ruled out of the match against Lucknow Super Giants, where Suryakumar Yadav led the side in his place. His expected return couldn’t come at a more sensitive moment, with MI still chasing a path to the playoffs and needing experienced performers to deliver quickly if they want to spark a stunning recovery in their IPL 2026 campaign.
Hardik did not join the first large group of Mumbai Indians players and support staff who travelled to Raipur, but a late update indicated he may link up with the squad via a flight closer to departure time. With a six-day gap between MI’s earlier game versus Lucknow on May 4 and the next assignment against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 10, the franchise is expected to move its travelling contingent in stages, arriving in Raipur across multiple batches.
Even so, Pandya’s fitness remains a key talking point. There is uncertainty around whether he will be available for the encounter against the defending champions at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium, especially after the back issue has already kept him sidelined for two matches earlier this season.
“It is up to Nitin Patel and the medical team,” a Mumbai Indians source indicated, underscoring that the final decision will be driven by the assessment of Pandya’s readiness.
MI’s slim playoff hopes on the line
For Mumbai Indians, the margin for error is effectively gone. With seven defeats and three wins, they sit in ninth place on the points table and require a near-perfect finish to remain in the playoff hunt. That means each of their remaining matches becomes a must-win scenario, and the side will be counting on senior heads and match-winners to deliver under pressure.
There is an additional selection question for the Bengaluru game involving Suryakumar Yadav. His availability is also under a cloud, since he welcomed a baby girl on Thursday. MI will have to decide whether he is fit and ready to return immediately or whether he needs a pause before rejoining the playing XI.
While the captaincy and fitness puzzles swirl around the squad, Mumbai Indians received a major boost from the return of Rohit Sharma. The former MI skipper returned emphatically to the starting line-up after missing several matches with a hamstring injury. Rohit struck 84 off 44 balls, and along with fellow opener Ryan Rickelton, gave MI the foundation for a six-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants—an outcome that kept their season alive and raised the urgency for a strong response against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
