Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and chose to bowl first in the Indian Premier League match against Chennai Super Kings on Thursday at Mumbai. The fixture is being treated as the season’s showpiece, with Mumbai—five-time champions—taking on another franchise that has also lifted the trophy five times, CSK. Widely seen as the IPL’s most storied rivalry, the contest has often earned the nickname “El Clasico” of the league. Both sides currently sit in the lower half of the points table. Mumbai will be buoyed by the momentum from ending a run of four straight defeats in their previous game, while Chennai will be looking to find steadier form as they search for consistency.
Pandya, speaking after the toss, explained that the decision-making was centred on intensity and execution. “We are gonna bowl first. A lot of boxes were ticked, the intensity was there. We needed that game where everyone gets involved and contributes. There was a conscious effort to keep the intensity in your hands, and we wanted to enjoy it—things went our way. It looks green, but it actually played really well. Same team,” he said.
There was also a notable absence from both camps, with Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni unavailable for their respective teams. CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad acknowledged Dhoni’s influence and said his presence adds a special edge to the atmosphere wherever CSK plays. “We would have bowled first as well. It was a 50-50 call. You have to bat well at Wankhede. We are not able to cash in in a couple of moments, so we have to make sure we cash in and get that win. (Wherever you go, men in yellow, there’s a lot of noise?) We are ready to go. All thanks to the legend (Dhoni), who is not here unfortunately. Hopefully, we will make them happy tonight,” Gaikwad remarked.
