IPL 2026 Auction Flops: Big-Bet Purchases Yield Little Impact for Teams

With the IPL 2026 still in its early phase, most franchises have already completed three games apiece—except Royal Challengers Bengaluru. While the tournament’s long run means fortunes can swing quickly, the current pattern points to a worrying trend for the league’s biggest payers: many of the leading buy-ins at the 2026 auction have not delivered the impact expected of their price tags. The main exception so far is Rajasthan Royals spinner Ravi Bishnoi, who has found a strong rhythm with the batters and given his team plenty to cheer.

Biggest auction spendouts yet to hit their stride

Looking at the top-10 highest earners from IPL 2026, the total investment adds up to Rs 125.20 crore. If Ravi Bishnoi’s figure is taken out of the equation—he was signed by Rajasthan Royals for Rs 7.20 crore, and has been one of the standout performers—the remaining nine players were acquired for Rs 118 crore. However, all nine of those names have yet to fully justify the premium they commanded at the auction.

Performance snapshots: top-10 earners in IPL 2026

  • Cameron Green (KKR, Rs 25.20 crore): The Australian all-rounder began his IPL 2026 campaign with KKR by bowling his first over against Lucknow Super Giants. In that outing, he returned figures of 1/28 in two overs. With the bat, Green has accumulated 56 runs across four matches, striking at an average of 18.67—an output that may look below par for a player expected to bat in the No. 3 or No. 4 slot.
  • Matheesha Pathirana (KKR, Rs 18 crore): Pathirana picked up a calf strain during the T20 World Cup 2026. He has begun bowling work in the nets, but there has been no official update on when he will be back in match action.
  • Kartik Sharma (CSK, Rs 14.20 crore): The power-hitting youngster has featured in three matches, posting scores of 18 against RR, 1 against PBKS, and 6 against RCB.
  • Prashant Veer (CSK, Rs 14.20 crore): CSK also placed a significant bet on another emerging talent. Veer showed promise with a knock of 43 versus RCB, though it came in a losing effort. Beyond that innings, he has not yet produced something truly special.
  • Liam Livingstone (SRH, Rs 13 crore): The spin-bowling all-rounder has played only one match so far and has scored 14 runs.
  • Mustafizur Rahman (KKR, Rs 9.20 crore): The Bangladesh pacer was ruled out of IPL 2026 even before the tournament began.
  • Josh Inglis (LSG, Rs 8.60 crore): Inglis has not yet made an appearance in IPL 2026.
  • Auqib Nabi (DC, Rs 8.40 crore): Nabi, the pace option from Jammu and Kashmir, is also yet to play a match in this season.
  • Ravi Bishnoi (RR, Rs 7.20 crore): Bishnoi has been the standout performer among the top earners so far, with seven wickets in three matches.
  • Jason Holder (GT, Rs 7.20 crore): Holder, the West Indies all-rounder, has not yet played a match in IPL 2026.

The early takeaway: one clear exception

As the season moves forward, the league’s biggest auction investments are largely waiting for their moment. Most of the top earners have either produced modest returns, are dealing with fitness and availability issues, or have not yet had a chance to play. For now, Ravi Bishnoi remains the most convincing proof that the price tag can translate into match-winning numbers—at least among the top-10 earners currently under the spotlight.
