The BCCI is expected to announce the venues for the IPL 2026 playoffs and the final in the near future, but the location of the championship match remains a sensitive topic. Internal information suggests that the knockout stage could be split between Punjab and Karnataka, while Bengaluru—where the defending champions may be involved—could face obstacles that make hosting the title game difficult.
One BCCI source explained that the usual practice for the IPL final is to allow the defending champions to stage the match at their home venue. However, Bengaluru is currently dealing with political friction, particularly around demands for MLA tickets, which could disrupt the expected arrangement. The source said that if the matter is not resolved, the BCCI may shift the final to a different city rather than proceed with the original plan.
Before this venue uncertainty, attention had already turned to the ticket issue in Karnataka ahead of the IPL 2026 opener. Ahead of the tournament’s opening match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the defending champions, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar suggested that every MLA should receive at least five IPL tickets. He argued that elected representatives are “VIPs” and should not have to queue for access like regular fans.
After Kashappanavar’s comments, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that three tickets for RCB fixtures in the ongoing IPL would be provided to MLAs and MPs. Soon after, Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara rejected claims that MLAs were misusing IPL match tickets. He stressed that tickets are purchased through online booking systems and are used only by individuals who actually buy them.
Parameshwara further clarified that at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, attendance is limited to the MLAs themselves or members of their families. He added that the tickets are clearly marked “non-transferable,” meaning they cannot be handed over or used by anyone else.
While the political debate continues in the background, the IPL 2026 points race is proving tight as of May 5. The league stage remains wide open, with multiple franchises still capable of landing in the playoff positions. Punjab Kings lead the table with 13 points from nine matches, backed by a strong net run rate that keeps them in control of the chase for qualification.
Chasing closely are Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans, all on 12 points. Their positions are separated by net run rate margins, with RCB currently ahead in the group due to superior statistical advantage. The competition remains intense, as small differences in results can quickly reshape the playoff picture.
In the mid-table, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals are both on eight points, keeping their postseason hopes alive even as they push for more consistent performances. Kolkata Knight Riders sit eighth on seven points, still not completely out of contention mathematically, although their route to qualification looks far more challenging.
At the other end of the standings, Mumbai Indians are struggling to secure a top-four finish, sitting with six points after ten matches. Lucknow Super Giants occupy the last spot with only four points, leaving their playoff chances effectively over as the tournament moves deeper into its crucial phase.
