Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old batting prodigy, has quickly become one of the IPL 2026’s most talked-about sensations after lighting up the Rajasthan Royals’ campaign. His rapid rise has also sparked louder calls for a place in India’s senior men’s setup ahead of the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England. The left-handed batter has taken another meaningful step towards a potential national call-up, earning a spot in India A for the 50-over assignment in Sri Lanka. Back in the IPL, Sooryavanshi has already amassed 583 runs in the tournament’s 19th edition, crossing the 500-run mark while operating as the Royals’ top-order spark. With momentum building, the teenager will be looking to help Rajasthan reach Qualifier 2 when they face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator on Wednesday, May 28, at Mullanpur.
As the excitement around the youngster continues to grow, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has urged the BCCI and the franchise to ensure the teenager is supported in the right way, so that his mindset remains steady. Dhumal stressed that talent alone is not enough at the highest level, and that maintaining mental strength is crucial if a young player is to handle pressure and expectations over the long run.
“We would expect the BCCI and the franchise to guide him—making sure he learns the right way to think and behave—so that his temperament stays intact,” Dhumal said. He added that performance is shaped by more than physical ability, pointing to the role of psychological resilience in high-stakes cricket. “Sport isn’t only about physical skill; it’s also about mental toughness,” he said. Dhumal also indicated that the systems around the player should help his skill set translate into long-term success for India. “And we will do our part to ensure that the kind of talent he has lets him represent India for many, many years,” he added.
“Ups and downs” part of the journey
Dhumal also acknowledged that, like every player, Sooryavanshi is bound to experience the inevitable swings that come with elite cricket. In such moments, he said, the responsibility on cricket’s governing bodies and the franchise increases—particularly to help the youngster stay focused rather than lose his bearings. “Like any great player, he will experience ups and downs. That’s the beauty of sport,” Dhumal remarked. He explained that setbacks are part of how players learn to respond, stressing the importance of bouncing back after failure. “He will fail. He will go through a low. But that’s what sport teaches you—how to come back and deliver an even better performance in the next match,” he said. Dhumal highlighted that this approach builds a mindset applicable beyond cricket as well. “Life will never be a one-way road where you only rise,” he added.
The IPL chairman further noted that Sooryavanshi’s recent performances—both in the current season and as part of the U-19 environment—should have already shown him the reality of losing spells and tough days. “I’m sure the boy, based on his performances this season and his U-19 experience, would have seen many failures,” Dhumal said. “But in the next game, he would have tried to perform even better and help his team win,” he added.
Century against Sunrisers; blazing strike rate
In IPL 2026, Sooryavanshi has already registered a century, and notably, that milestone came against Sunrisers Hyderabad during the group stage. His batting has been defined by explosive scoring, with a strike rate of 232.27. The numbers also underline his boundary-making power: he has struck 53 sixes compared to 50 fours. With the Royals set to face SRH in a do-or-die match, his form will be watched closely as Rajasthan aims to keep its run going towards Qualifier 2.
Dhumal also framed Sooryavanshi’s story as a perfect fit for the IPL’s core promise—talent given a stage. “Vaibhav truly represents the IPL’s tagline: ‘where talent meets opportunity.’ That boy is something else, isn’t he?” Dhumal said. He added that while the raw talent was always there, the crucial factor is the chance to express it at the highest level. “Talent had been present, but how do they get the opportunity? That opportunity—the platform—has been provided by the IPL,” he concluded.
