IPL Spotlight on Shubman Gill After T20 World Cup Snub, Told to Attack

Shubman Gill is entering the current IPL cycle with a clear sense of unfinished business after being left out of India’s T20 World Cup squad at the final stage. With the national team opting for a batting mix built around an ultra-aggressive mindset, Gill now finds himself under the IPL spotlight to prove that his T20 game can fit the franchise’s tempo. His strike-rate question has often shaped how he’s been used in T20I batting orders, but the emphasis this season is on whether he can reaffirm his T20 credentials on a consistent basis.

Gill started the tournament in encouraging fashion, striking 39 runs against Punjab Kings at a strike rate of 144.44. He then missed the second match because of a minor injury, and while that pause disrupted his momentum, it has also added urgency to his comeback. His next test arrives against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday night, where he will be expected to deliver a performance that makes a strong case for his role at the top.

Doull’s view: play with freedom, hit early

Former New Zealand batter Simon Doull believes Gill should now have the mental space to express himself in the IPL without the weight of being part of India’s T20I plans. Doull argues that with Gill removed from the immediate T20I picture, there is “nothing to lose” in the shortest format, and that the opener should lean into a more attacking role from the front.

Doull also points to how Yashasvi Jaiswal has continued to take risks at the start of innings this season, suggesting Gill can create a similar impact if he finds his rhythm. In Doull’s assessment, Gill’s best path is to set the tone aggressively and lead by example through his early overs approach.

“He’s not part of the Indian T20I setup. So he actually has nothing to lose in T20 cricket. He’s the guy who should be more aggressive at the top of the order. He should be the one who goes really hard. Shubman should set the tone and be aggressive as the leader. He can do what Jaiswal is doing easily this year. If he can find form and rhythm, that sets them on their merry way,” Doull said.

Doull further stressed that Gill must avoid overthinking and allow himself to play with full instinctive freedom. He highlighted that Jaiswal, despite also missing out on the T20 World Cup squad, has kept attacking in the IPL and is currently leading the tournament charts with the Orange Cap.

“Shubman Gill has to get out of his own way a little bit,” Doull reiterated, adding that the key is for Gill to stop holding himself back and play without self-imposed restraint at the top. Doull believes that if Gill adopts a stronger attacking approach, it can help his side chase totals closer to the 200–220 range more often.

In Doull’s view, Gill’s ability to “unleash” himself and enjoy his batting should translate into bigger totals for the team. If he does that consistently, Doull expects it to set the franchise on a more dominant track through the season.

“Shubman just has to get out of his own way a little bit and express yourself. That’s when they’ll get the 200 to 220 scores. He can just be free and play now that he’s not part of the Indian T20I setup. If he can do that, it’ll set them on their way. I want him to unleash and really enjoy it by attacking,” Doull said.
