Sunrisers Hyderabad confirmed their spot in the IPL 2026 playoffs with a five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk on Monday. Chasing 181 on a surface that offered little pace early on, SRH steadied the innings and then accelerated to finish the job in 19 overs. The chase was largely shaped by a decisive partnership between Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen.
Quick facts
- Result: Sunrisers Hyderabad won by five wickets vs Chennai Super Kings
- Venue: Chepauk
- Chase target: 181
- Winning margin: 5 wickets
- Key duo: Ishan Kishan (70 off 47) and Heinrich Klaasen (47 off 26)
- Partnership impact: a 75-run stand that swung momentum after an early setback
- SRH points: 16 (playoff qualification confirmed)
- CSK points: 12 from 13 matches (slim mathematical chance remains)
Kishan set the tone with 70 runs off 47 balls, striking seven fours and clearing the ropes three times. Klaasen complemented him with 47 from just 26 deliveries, adding the brisk finishing touches SRH needed. After SRH started cautiously, the innings took an early hit when Travis Head was dismissed, and the required rate looked like it could tighten. However, Kishan and Klaasen rebuilt with intent, turning the chase decisively in their favour.
Abhishek Sharma’s timing did not come easily, but Klaasen’s aggressive intent helped SRH take control during the middle overs. Once the pair found rhythm, the innings stopped being a chase and started becoming a march. The 75-run stand proved to be the momentum switch, ensuring Chennai never got the breakthrough that would have forced a late scramble.
Cummins tightens the screws for SRH
Earlier in the match, SRH skipper Pat Cummins delivered another high-impact spell to keep Chennai under pressure. He returned figures of 3/28 and struck at critical moments, ensuring CSK were never allowed to build a fully settled platform. Chennai’s start looked promising, driven by Sanju Samson, who attacked from the first over and struck boundaries at a steady clip.
Cummins then changed the course of the innings with a sharp dismissal of Samson, removing the early momentum-maker. From there, CSK had to rely on smaller contributions, with Urvil Patel and Kartik Sharma providing brief but useful cameos. Dewald Brevis also showed signs of form with an entertaining 44, while Shivam Dube added 26 as CSK built to 180/7.
Even so, Cummins kept finding ways to break alliances and prevent CSK from gaining full control. He accounted for Kartik Sharma with a slower delivery and later dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad, who struggled to get going, managing just 15 runs off 21 balls. With wickets falling at regular intervals, CSK were left with a total that was competitive on paper but difficult to defend once SRH’s chase clicked.
Playoff race heats up
With the win, SRH moved to 16 points and sealed their place in the playoffs, joining Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the qualified group. Chennai, however, remain on 12 points from 13 matches. They still have a slender mathematical route to the knockouts, but it will depend on results and their performance in the final league game.
