Jitesh Sharma explains why he called Vaibhav Sooryavanshi “unprofessional” in IPL 2026

Royal Challengers Bengaluru wicket-keeper Jitesh Sharma has moved to clarify remarks that sparked online chatter after he described Rajasthan Royals teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as “unprofessional.” The comments were made in a conversation where Jitesh was asked to identify a promising young Indian prospect, and while he initially highlighted Sooryavanshi’s skill and mindset, he later explained that the phrase was taken out of context.

How the “unprofessional” comment came up

The statement traces back to Jitesh’s appearance on AB de Villiers’ YouTube channel. During the chat, Jitesh was prompted to name a young Indian player who he believes has the potential to become a major star. Without hesitation, he selected Sooryavanshi, pointing to his all-round abilities and temperament.

Jitesh said that when AB asked, “Which youngster do you think could become an Indian star or player?”, his immediate answer was Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He added that his reasoning centred on the teenager’s technique, mentality, and hard work, along with the impression that Sooryavanshi could dominate across all three formats. However, Jitesh added that “in reality” the teenager does not always behave with the same level of professionalism expected at the highest level of cricket.

Jitesh’s clarification: close personal bond and the real context

Speaking later on an RCB podcast, Jitesh addressed the backlash and put the wording into perspective. He stressed that his relationship with Sooryavanshi shapes how he speaks about him, highlighting how well they know each other.

  • Jitesh said Sooryavanshi is “a very good friend” and that they are extremely close.
  • He noted that because of their friendship, he can talk to the teenager freely and without judgement.

What Jitesh said about Sooryavanshi off the field

Jitesh also defended the teenager by describing his off-field nature as typical of someone his age. He portrayed Sooryavanshi as enjoying simple pleasures and said the two spend time together in a relaxed way.

  • He described Sooryavanshi as a 15-year-old who loves ice cream.
  • Jitesh said Sooryavanshi comes to his room and eats it with him, with Jitesh not eating it himself.
  • He said Sooryavanshi visits their house, speaks with his wife, and watches videos on YouTube.
  • Jitesh added that Sooryavanshi is “like my younger brother.”

Responding to criticism: “Let a child be a child”

When asked to respond to the criticism, Jitesh played down the noise. He argued that while professionalism is required for someone performing at this level, it is unrealistic to treat a teenager like he is fully grown. In his view, the youngster should not be weighed down with expectations beyond his age.

  • Jitesh said he does not “care what people say.”
  • He acknowledged there is professionalism expected because Sooryavanshi must perform at this standard, but stressed that the teenager is still only 15.
  • He urged that the youngster should be allowed to remain a child.
  • He said that when Sooryavanshi is with him, he is comfortable being himself because Jitesh does not judge him.
  • Jitesh said he tells Sooryavanshi to focus on batting, watch TV, and eat whatever he wants—while remembering that he is only fifteen.
  • He concluded that Sooryavanshi is happy with that approach.
