Royal Challengers Bengaluru arrive at their next IPL 2026 assignment with renewed confidence after engineering a dramatic two-wicket triumph over Mumbai Indians. Kolkata Knight Riders, meanwhile, have reignited their playoff hopes by stringing together four straight wins, bouncing back from a miserable stretch in which they suffered five losses in six matches and also had one no-result. With both sides desperate to push momentum further, the spotlight now falls on RCB’s upcoming showdown with KKR.
Kaif expects a boost if Varun Chakaravarthy misses
Former India batter Mohammad Kaif believes the contest could tilt in Bengaluru’s favour if KKR’s spinner Varun Chakaravarthy is unable to take his place. Kaif’s view centres on how much Varun has influenced Kolkata’s bowling in recent outings, and what it might mean if the leg-spin/mystery spin option is absent for this key match.
Varun’s recent wicket haul and the injury concern
A major reason behind KKR’s revival has been Varun Chakaravarthy’s return to sharp form. In his most recent four games, he has picked up eight wickets, and he has once again become a pivotal part of Kolkata’s bowling plan. However, his fitness for the match against RCB is uncertain after he sustained an injury while trying to stop a shot from Ishan Kishan during the clash versus Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was later seen limping during his spell against Delhi Capitals, adding to the doubts over his availability.
KKR assistant coach Shane Watson has indicated that Varun is dealing with soreness and is being monitored closely. Varun also took part in training, delivering a brief spell, though he did not bowl at full intensity. After that short workout, he spent the rest of the session doing stretching exercises and interacting with teammates.
Why Kaif thinks RCB could benefit
On JioStar’s ‘Match Centre Live’, Kaif argued that any absence of Varun would be a substantial positive for RCB, particularly because Virat Kohli typically feels comfortable when facing quicker spin bowling. Kaif said that if Varun is not available, it would be a “big plus” for Bengaluru, noting that the spinner has looked in rhythm recently—bowling well and consistently hitting the right areas.
Kaif also highlighted Kohli’s preference and effectiveness against faster spin options, suggesting that a change in the KKR spin unit could alter RCB’s matchups in their favour. He further stressed that the ideal scenario for Kolkata would be to have Varun fully fit, as it helps them stick to their preferred structure: “two pacers, one all-rounder and three spinners.”
Anukul Roy’s powerplay impact and Narine’s usage
Kaif also singled out Anukul Roy for his influence during the powerplay. He suggested that Roy’s performances early on give KKR the flexibility to delay Sunil Narine’s involvement slightly, allowing Kolkata to deploy him at a time when he can effectively control the middle overs.
Kaif praised Roy’s powerplay role, adding that it provides the side with tactical freedom to use Narine more strategically rather than immediately, ultimately shaping how the game unfolds in the middle phase.
