KKR Get First IPL 2026 Point After Rain-Abandoned Clash vs PBKS

Kolkata Knight Riders finally picked up their first points of IPL 2026 after their match against Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens was abandoned on Monday due to relentless rain and a wet outfield that made any continuation impossible. The interruption began when the early rain arrived at the venue, with KKR reeling at 25 for 2 in 3.4 overs. Although the authorities advanced the cut-off time to 11.14pm, play never restarted from the stoppage point, and both sides were forced to settle for a point apiece.

Punjab Kings, who benefited from the abandoned contest, moved briefly to the top of the table at the time with five points from three matches. For KKR, it meant their tally remained at one point from three fixtures, leaving them ahead of Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings—both of whom were yet to open their account. The situation echoed an earlier season too: the KKR vs PBKS meeting in IPL 2025 was also called off because of rain. KKR now have a third consecutive home game, taking on Lucknow Super Giants on Thursday, though forecasts again predict rain for that matchday.

Back at Monday’s encounter, the weather worsened as the evening went on. From around 9pm, rain and strong winds struck Eden Gardens, building gradually into a thunderstorm. The gusts were so severe that the distinctive “hanging” press box—supported by iron beams—shuddered under the pressure, prompting comparisons to an “earthquake” as the structure visibly shook. Conditions eased only after 10.30pm, when the drizzle finally stopped and the ground staff began removing the covers.

Once the covers were peeled back, the pitch and outfield looked largely unaffected, with no major signs of seepage. Still, a few puddles had formed near the boundary areas because of runoff from the covers after they were taken off. After that, an inspection was conducted by the on-field umpires, Abhijeet Bengeri and J Madanagopal, who assessed the playing conditions.

Before the final call, Sourav Ganguly—the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal—also checked the firmness of the surface. Following a prolonged discussion involving KKR captain Rahane and Punjab Kings counterpart Shreyas Iyer, the match was officially abandoned at 11pm.

It was a day that did not go KKR’s way on multiple fronts. With both their main spin options unavailable—an informed Sunil Narine and an injured Varun Chakravarthy—KKR’s decision to bat first appeared to have backfired almost immediately. Punjab Kings’ Australian quick Xavier Bartlett delivered a decisive burst, taking two wickets in three balls during a fiery second over and sending back Finn Allen for 6 and Cameron Green for 4, both among the star overseas names.

Arshdeep Singh had made an early impact in the opening over, but Bartlett’s swing and seam in the next passage of play proved the difference. Allen started hesitantly against the left-armer, edging and missing more than once before Bartlett completed the damage in the following over. Allen did have moments where he survived—beaten on the edge and nearly undone by a yorker he somehow dug out for four—but the luck did not last. When he tried an inside-out drive against a length ball outside off, he could only produce a faint nick.

Promoted to No. 3 ahead of Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Green—who is the highest-paid overseas player at Rs 25.20 crore—could not find rhythm either. Earlier in the tournament, he had managed 18 against Mumbai Indians and 2 versus Sunrisers Hyderabad, and against KKR on Monday his struggles continued as Bartlett struck again with a similar back-of-a-length delivery in the channel, swinging the ball away and luring another loose attempt.

With Bartlett continuing to apply pressure and KKR forced onto the back foot, Rahane and Raghuvanshi tried to rebuild. Their recovery, however, was interrupted when steady drizzle halted proceedings at 7.45pm. At Eden Gardens, the ground staff were quick to cover the entire field once the venue had full ground covers in place, and there was a brief period of relief when the covers began to come off. But rain returned soon after, leaving spectators increasingly frustrated, with many starting to leave the stadium.

The disruptions unfolded in front of Shah Rukh Khan, the Bollywood superstar and co-owner of KKR, who made his first appearance of the season at the venue only to watch another rain-hit evening. Attendance was also thin for the match, with 29,358 spectators present.
