KKR vs GT IPL 2026: Rahane’s struggling side seeks first win in Ahmedabad

Kolkata Knight Riders are enduring one of their toughest starts in IPL 2026, still without a win after five matches. The franchise has lost four times, with one game being washed out by rain, which has left them with a point rather than the momentum they would have wanted. With time slipping away, Ajinkya Rahane’s side heads to Ahmedabad for a Friday clash against Gujarat Titans, searching for that elusive first victory of the season. Gujarat, meanwhile, arrive in a steadier rhythm, occupying sixth place with a record of two wins and two defeats from their first four outings.

For KKR, the bigger issue has been finding a repeatable winning formula. Their overseas resources have not consistently delivered, with Finn Allen and Cameron Green both going through lean patches. Even among the retained Indian capped players, Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh are yet to hit the kind of form that typically allows a team to build pressure in the middle overs and convert starts into totals that defend well.

In their most recent match, KKR experimented with their batting structure by pushing Sunil Narine up to the opening slot. The move, however, came at a cost to their usual rhythm, as it meant Rahane—who has been one of their most effective powerplay batters—dropped further down the order. Bowling-wise, KKR struggled early, but there has been a gradual improvement as the tournament has progressed. Kartik Tyagi and Vaibhav Arora have looked more settled of late, though the side still needs Varun Chakaravarthy to return to the standards he set earlier in the season. Chakaravarthy has been out of sorts since the T20 World Cup knockout stage began, and KKR will be hoping that the Ahmedabad conditions spark a turnaround.

Gujarat Titans, on the other hand, have multiple reasons to believe their best cricket is close. Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan are working their way back toward their peak form, while Jos Buttler has also shown signs of getting things moving in the right direction. Prasidh Krishna continues to challenge batters with his compact, slower spell, and Rashid Khan has been finding his rhythm again—an important factor for GT when matches tighten in the middle overs.

Ahead of the contest, Glenn Phillips, speaking for Gujarat, highlighted the demands of maintaining consistency across such a long and unforgiving campaign. “The IPL is a very tough tournament. It’s very hard to stay consistent for a long period of time. We are doing a lot of things well, we are working hard in the training, and we are doing as much as possible to prepare ourselves for the games. Obviously, every team is very strong in their own right and we go out there and try our best on each given day and hopefully we bring some results as well,” Phillips said.

With KKR desperate to end their winless run and GT aiming to build on their current position, the Friday match in Ahmedabad sets up as a crucial test for both sides—one searching for stability, the other trying to turn improving form into a stronger league table push.
