KKR vs RCB IPL 2026: Varun Chakravarthy Update on Mystery Spinner Selection

Kolkata Knight Riders are set to take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a high-stakes IPL 2026 encounter at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur, with the match carrying the feel of a must-win for KKR. The two-time champions currently sit in eighth place in the standings, having won four of their games and lost five, which has left them with nine points. With the playoffs still within reach, KKR’s message is clear: they will need results to go their way in the remainder of their campaign, and ideally win every match left, to keep their postseason hopes alive.

One of the biggest talking points ahead of the clash is whether KKR’s leading spin option, Varun Chakravarthy, will be fit in time. The team is monitoring the star leg-spinner closely after he picked up a concern during the previous game, aggravating an issue in his left leg. The question for KKR is straightforward: will Chakravarthy be available for the fixture against RCB? Ahead of the match, the club’s staff did not give a definitive answer, but the uncertainty around his fitness is clearly a major factor in their planning.

Assistant coach Shane Watson addressed the situation, explaining that Chakravarthy is still being assessed. Watson said the spinner had been sore during the “second last” match and, in the prior game, was dealing with significant pain even though he still managed to deliver an impressive bowling performance. Watson’s comments made it clear that his recovery is being handled day-to-day, with the staff weighing his ability to handle the workload and maintain effectiveness.

Watson stated that the franchise is hopeful Chakravarthy will be available for the game in Raipur, but admitted they are not fully certain yet. Alongside the fitness watch, the coaching staff have also been encouraged by the form and development of a young batter—Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Watson spoke very highly of the 21-year-old, calling his skill set “astonishing” and highlighting the rapid growth he has shown as he learns to adjust his game.

In particular, Watson praised Raghuvanshi’s capacity to adapt—emphasising how the youngster can respond to different match situations, handle a variety of bowling styles, and still access a wide range of shot options. For Watson, that ability to modify his approach across conditions and opponents is a key sign that Raghuvanshi is maturing quickly, and it gives KKR an additional dimension in their batting plans.

Watson also suggested that KKR have finally started to gel as a unit after a sluggish start to the season. Coming into the match against the defending champions, he said the group has shown encouraging signs in recent games, with the side beginning to come together across all phases. He framed the late-season turnaround as something the IPL has seen before—teams that do not begin well have still found a way to surge into the final stages of the tournament—and stressed that KKR are aware that a similar turnaround is possible.

He added that the franchise is not thinking about next season right now, focusing instead on the present. Watson noted that from the middle part of the tournament, the cricket played in the last couple of matches has been particularly promising, and it has reflected a clearer sense of unity within the squad. The assistant coach’s confidence is rooted in the idea that the team’s performances have improved as different combinations and roles have begun to click.

Watson further explained that the adjustment period was always going to take time because of substantial changes made after the auction. He said it takes effort for everyone to understand where they fit in the overall structure, especially with a good deal of turnover from the previous season to the current one. However, with things now settling down, Watson believes the batting order has become more stable, and the team has gained a better understanding of what works best based on the composition of their full squad.

As KKR prepare for the encounter, the focus remains on two key areas: getting the right balance in their playing XI—especially if Chakravarthy is unable to take his place—and continuing the improved momentum that has helped them move toward a more settled rhythm. For the franchise, the Raipur clash against RCB is not just another fixture, but a crucial step in the race to keep their campaign alive.
