With only eleven days remaining in the league phase of IPL 2026, the battle for the play-offs has swung wide open. A surge late in the campaign from Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings has kept the top-four race extremely competitive, with as many as eight franchises still able to qualify, at least in mathematical terms.
For KKR, the lift has been especially dramatic. The franchise had appeared headed for an early exit, having gone without a win for six straight matches—suffering five defeats and also recording a no result. However, four consecutive victories have hauled them back into the conversation, setting up a finish where each game carries knockout-level pressure.
KKR’s playoff equation
Kolkata currently occupy the eighth spot, collecting nine points from ten matches. Importantly, they also have one game in hand compared with several nearby teams. With four matches left on their schedule, their highest possible points total is 17, which could still be enough to earn a play-off berth depending on how results fall for others around them.
Even so, the task is not straightforward. Projections place KKR’s likelihood of reaching the play-offs at 12.8%. They also retain a faint chance of finishing inside the top two, but that scenario is estimated at just 3.6%, underscoring how tightly balanced the remaining fixtures are.
The schedule ahead is demanding. KKR begin with an away match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Wednesday, May 13. They then return to Eden Gardens for three home fixtures against Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals. With three of their remaining games at home in Kolkata, the franchise will be looking to turn that advantage into crucial points in the final stretch.
Watson senses belief returning
Assistant coach Shane Watson believes the group has regained confidence by staying grounded and refusing to over-focus on long-term scenarios. Speaking ahead of the clash with RCB, he stressed that the team’s attention has been locked on the immediate challenge rather than the bigger picture.
“To be completely honest, we haven’t really discussed anything about the future at all,” Watson said before the match. “We’re focused on the next game.”
He also pointed to the improvement the side has shown across multiple areas as the season has progressed, particularly in the most recent run of matches. Watson described it as encouraging to see the squad begin to gel more consistently after a difficult opening half.
“From where we were halfway through the tournament to the cricket we’ve been playing over the last couple of games, it’s been very impressive to see our group come together across all facets,” Watson added.
Watson further said that IPL history offers KKR a reminder that teams can recover from a poor start and still build momentum deep into the campaign. For the squad, that belief is now becoming a key part of their mindset with the season entering its most decisive phase.
For KKR, the message is clear: win all four remaining matches, and the play-offs remain within reach. But with the race so finely poised, one misstep could quickly bring an end to the revival that has changed the mood around the franchise.
