Virat Kohli looked utterly absorbed in the chaos unfolding at the Chepauk end as Urvil Patel produced one of the most explosive displays of IPL batting in recent memory. A clip from Star Sports captured the RCB star seated in the dugout, watching the carnage during Chennai Super Kings’ contest against Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday, just before Bengaluru’s game against Mumbai Indians in Raipur. The timing made the moment even more noticeable: Urvil was already in the middle of an innings that would quickly become a talking point across the league.
For Chennai, Urvil’s impact began almost immediately. He struck the joint-fastest half-century in IPL history, moving to the milestone in only 13 deliveries and matching a record set by Yashasvi Jaiswal back in 2023. Once he found rhythm, the chase transformed. Urvil took charge during CSK’s pursuit of 204, and after Sanju Samson departed for 28, the momentum shifted fully in Chennai’s favour within minutes. He struck Avesh Khan for three straight maximums, then proceeded to dismantle Digvesh Singh Rathi with another punishing over packed with boundaries and towering sixes.
By the time the powerplay came to an end, Lucknow were under sustained pressure and struggling to contain the pace and precision of Urvil’s hitting. He also etched his name into the record books by becoming the first batter in IPL history to clear the ropes six times within the opening eight balls of an innings. From there, the innings only escalated—he raced to 41 not out off just eight balls, setting a new IPL benchmark for the highest score after the first eight deliveries of an innings.
Urvil kept going at full throttle, eventually finishing with 65 from 23 balls. His knock included eight sixes and two fours before his stay ended when he was dismissed by Shahbaz Ahmed. One of the most emotional scenes of the night followed almost immediately after he reached his fifty: the young batter pulled a note from his pocket and dedicated the landmark to his father, saying, “This is for you, Papa.”
Even with Urvil’s brilliance drawing all the spotlight, Chennai still had to complete the chase after Lucknow managed a late fightback. Ruturaj Gaikwad provided the platform with a composed 42, and then Shivam Dube delivered the finishing touch by smashing two sixes in the final over. In the end, CSK sealed a five-wicket victory with four balls to spare.
Earlier in the match, Lucknow had posted 203/8, with the platform laid by Josh Inglis’s sensational 85 off 33 balls. His innings featured the fastest IPL fifty ever recorded at Chepauk. However, despite that explosive start, the visitors lost their grip in the middle overs, with Jamie Overton striking at crucial moments to claim three wickets for Chennai and help slow the chase.
